Low Deflection shafts???

I hear and see alot out there about low deflection shafts...is there any truth that they "play better"... I recently heard about a Predator shaft that was fine honed down to less than .003 deflection??? I assume zero deflection is the best??

I remember seeing Rempe play with a Muecci, and Cliff Joyner loves "whippy" shafts...so whats the scoop??

After all the arguments...which shaft is truly the "lowest" deflection shaft out there?

Thanks.

1. This topic is covered to death - do a search.

2. ".003 deflection" doesn't mean anything. .003 what?

3. Zero deflection is probably impossible.

As stated, there is an abundance of info on this topic. IMO it comes down to this, It's all personal preference. Do they play better????? Again, personal opinion as to what each person likes. The key is, they play different. I for one like the difference. Others don't. I can play with either ld shafts or regular but I prefer my predator. Best thing to do is find a player you know with one or a tiger, or ob1 or dominator, hell even lucasi and players and everyone these days have them, and try it and form your own opinion.

LD shaft?

I'm only a few months into 3 different LD's. IMHO I think LD's would be SUPER GREAT for anyone just stating the game. As for SOME of us 'old dogs' I'm not so sure. Just yesterday I shot the cue ball into the corner pocket on a full table 'straight' up & what should have been back to the 8 for the win. Instead I lost because I mis-calculated the non-squirt & subsequent swirve due to the english I was useing. The LD's enhance some shots but IMO detract from certain others. I think it comes down to each his own. I'm to the point where I think it's LD for some shots & regular for others. Maybe soon we'll be carrying 14 cues like 14 clubs in golf. If anyone van help in the learning curve swith from regular to LD the advise would be greatly appreciated. PM me or post To: Olde Dog English!

LD is definitely not fiction....these shafts reduce deflection, there's no question about that. reducing the mass of the front end of the shaft cuts deflection. whether they "play better" is completely subjective, some people love them, some say it doesn't affect anything, the arguments are endless on here about that.

zero deflection isn't physically possible. though accounting for swerve, it may appear to be zero deflection on some shots. if you could build a LD shaft that was very near zero, with swerve it could theoretically appear to be negative deflection, which is kind of wierd I guess.

in my testing, the lowest deflection shafts are the thin ones at 11.75mm...the predator z2 and ob-2. for more traditional thicker shafts, the 314-2 and ob-1 performed the best. mezz shafts perform just as well as the 314-2/ob-1 but at a slightly thinner 12.5mm. beware there's a lot of shafts that claim low deflection, but in many cases the technology only reduces deflection a little bit, and nowhere near a predator, ob, mezz.

The swerve didn't change; only the squirt did. Once you know how to adjust for that difference even shots with lots of swerve will be easier with LD.

Fact or Fiction ?

PS to my earlier response. It is fact. They do cause much less cue ball squirt. The question is, is that 'really' a benefit? To my thinking, it is & it is not. For me, a 58 yr. old dog that has been 'chasing the bone' for 45 yrs. who never ever thought about it or the physics of it til just recently it puts more into my mind to figure out than just playing 'unconsciously'. But... now that I know about it, the damage has been done & the question for me is can I overcome the damage, one way or another. I certainly did not yesterday.

Zero deflection is a term that doesn't make a lot of sense.....
..you can only have zero deflection at a certain speed, at a certain distance
, with certain balls on a certain cloth at a certain temperature and humidity.

What LD shafts give you is a 'USER-FRIENDLY' hit.
...although many of them create the opposite problem for me personally...
...they 'Masse' too much for my liking.

I'm totally hooked to my 'caromish' tapered 12mm

This is coming from a long time, solid maple shaft player. For me, LD shafts make the hard shots easier and easy shots harder. My shotmaking accuracy goes up but everything else goes out the window.

Over the past 10 years for sure, most huge events have been won with
some sort of LD shaft.Results don't lie!

thanks for the info...well written!

I looked at who won the event and what the player used when he or she has won.Not all of them but a very high percentage has.Check it out.

Meucci's must have been great look how many tournaments were won with them and cuetecs over the years.

I wonder how many of those LD shaft users were sponsored players?

:)

Your right Meucci did win alot,Cuetec won alot but mainly with 2 players back then and now Shane.I agree, some may be sponsored and some maybe not but doesn't change the fact they've won with them and keep on winning with them.I'm sure Appleton has no complaints about Predator anytime in the near future:smile:
