Well I heard something disturbing about the compact curly florescents the other day.
Supposedly they have lots of microfractures in the coating that lets harmful UV rays through and you are not supposed to let the light directly touch your skin. The article I read recommended to always have some kind of colored glass, lamp shade, etc. between you and the light to absorb the UV rays.
If so, not only are the probably harming your skin and eyes but prehaps your table cloth as well?
