No Flo Chart....
TD will match Fargo #'s/Players each Round.
Each round the two worst and the two best have to play.
The rest in the middle also Fargo-ed-Up.
Could be a fun format.
I never liked drawing the best player in the tournament the first round in my early yrs.
Some players that have zero chance of winning.... enjoyed gettin' their ass beat.
Or their ego primed or.
So they say. :)

This would work great in single elimination format, But would create a nightmare for double elimination.

Just seed the whole field like a tennis tournament. Problem solved. If there even was a problem to start with. You want to have the best chance at having the best players around at the end not the early rounds. I hate to ask but what is the FR spread of your mystery event? 700 to 7-what? Is there gonna be any handicapping or is everyone playing even? The more i think about this the less your idea seems doable. Fun is not the word i'd use here.

700 and down.... was my thought. And like another, single elimination, wow, one of the best would be out first match :).

Down to what? All the way to like 400? There'd be some big game spots if so. Don't need to do that best-vs-best stuff. You just let the FR system do the work. That's what its for. Stop trying to out-think it.

I actually think it maybe could work but not for either double or single elimination. Debate tournaments do what they call power matching. The format is a number of preliminary rounds - 6 generally I think- then a single elimination bracket, the size of which depends on the size of the tournament. Figure 25% of field. So after some random draw preliminaries, they will “power match” which can separate top teams and/ or those who could “break” or not. So in the 6th preliminary round two 3-2 teams might meet, with one going to the elimination bracket and the other not. And the teams with bad records will meet in the later rounds. So they get to compete but know they aren’t advancing. I never worked in a tabroom and don’t know exactly how they do it. My kid has done more debate than I did and the kids seem to know how it works pretty well. At least enough to complain about draws and pairings and judging and stuff. 😆

I don’t know if it would work well for pool. Advantages are it gives people a guaranteed number of preliminary matches but isn’t a round robin either. Like anything, the best tend to get sorted out, but imperfectly. Some draws are better than others. Disadvantages are the necessity of a redraw or pairing in the middle of a tournament. I don’t know if that would be accepted in pool or if it is practical. I don’t see it in a tournament with a Calcutta for sure. I also don’t know how it would work for a given field size vs the number of tables. Never paid attention to that at debate tournaments- you need a classroom for each debate, but the schools or colleges where they happen seem to have more classrooms than most pool halls have tables.

I tend to think it wouldn’t work or that people wouldn’t like it if it did. Might be something to try in a small weekly tournament.
