Favorite 2018 Mosconi Match

I just watched Skyler whupping Shaw for the 3rd time and I will watch it again. As any one watching it knows, Shaw was doing his Shaw show for the rude Euro fans and Skyler humbly took care of business.

Those last couple of shots of Skyler's were priceless, as was his Shaw imitation.

Well played Skyler, well played and thanks for the memory!

Tyler vs Niels- America is down 2-0 and it’s the 23 year old kid from Wisconsin vs the European multiple time world champion in front of a very hostile crowd. Man did he deliver. The look on Niels face when he banks that 1 in the final rack is priceless, he looks like he’s about to flip the pool table over!

Also Albin vs Sky, I rewatched their first encounter in the 2015 Mosconi Cup, I was there. The kick shot albin made in the final rack was so crazy, no more extensions, the final five second clock ticking, BAM he kicks it so hard it gets air after it hits the rail, makes the kick with a leave. They were so nervous back then, even worse when they played in 2016, such a difference in 2018.

Tyler’s vs Niels for me. Watching the US go 0-2 to start made me nervous, felt like we could be doing a repeat of prior years and just not showing up to play at the level of the Europeans. And Niels seemed like an awfully tough match for Tyler’s first go at the Mosconi Cup. Instead he turned the set around, played an amazing match and got the first point on the board for the US and it just felt like the momentum abruptly shifted with that win.

My favorite match of 2018 was also the best Mosconi Cup match I've ever seen, and that would be Woodward vs Ouschan in Match 16. At 9-6 behind, Europe needed a fast start to session four and put it's top performer through day three into action immediately. With Shaw vs Styer approaching in Match 17, it certainly seemed that a win by Ouschan here would have soon led to a 9-8 score and the cup would have been very much in doubt.

... but then came the magic. With virtually perfect play, including four break and run racks, Ouschan kept the pressure on Skyler. With Ouschan breaking at double hill, it looked doubtful whether Woodward would even get another chance to shoot.

Ouschan broke wet, but had to push and he pushed into a kick. Skyler gave it back, and Ouschan proceeded to play one of the best clutch shots ever played at the Mosconi Cup. a masterful kick safe. Skyler had no choice but to try a difficult jump but rose to the occasion, jumped in the one and ran out to win the match. Back to back, two of the best clutch shots I've ever witnessed.

I'm calling it the best match ever played at the Mosconi Cup. Ouschan played mistake free pool and lost. Team Europe, down 10-6, appeared done.

I would've love to see Shane or Sky vs Albin or Shaw race to 11, 9b for maybe $1-2K after the Cup.

Shane lost to Albin in the WPA 9B finals one yr.

Strange that for 3 days no one on either team could really figure out the breaks, but in this match, for virtuallly the first 8 games, both players had complete control of the break, making balls and leaving themselves an opening shot almost automatically. It was only due to Albin not leaving himself a shot in the hill-hill game break that allowed Sky back to the table for his opportunity at that jump shot - after Sky passed back the push out in which Albin just barely moved the cue ball a few inches from where it previously was.

That was an incredibly played match with neither player missing a shot. The only mistake was one loose safety played by Sky I believe in game 6, which left Albin a makeable shot, but he chose to play safe instead, and somehow Woodward still escaped with that game.
