Okay, I searched this forum for a poll on the best or favorite or preferred Break Cue. Couldn't find one.

So, I'll ask: What is the best Break Cue (not Jump Break) for the money?

Thanks in advance.

I've tried at least a dozen.. Mezz Powerbreak, Sledghammer, Orange Crush, Stinger, Predator P2, J&J, etc. etc..

My Steve Lomax is so good. None of the others even compare. It's his straight Break cue, NOT a JB.. The separate jump cue is the nuts too!

What makes a good break cue? Surely they're all just wood, held together by metal? Why should there be such a big difference?

Ok then, why dont you go out and get two pieces of wood stick some metal in between, glue it together, and glue some leather on top. And then tell me its the same and theres no big difference.

"For the money?"

Orange Crusher from Mike Gulyassy's pro shop.

I've tried these 400-500 dollar break cues but they are not worth the extra dough. $225 retail all day for the Orange Crusher. Hit's em good.

Things such as shaft taper, ferrule material, tip material make the difference between break cues. Weight distribution makes a difference as well. Just has playing cues have differences so do break cues.

Others can go on in more detail. What I stated was just a beginning.

I agree.
SLIGHT differances. J&J is like $70 shipped, you can hit the cue w it to break the rack, it has a hard tip and looks pretty cool too.

Ok, but designing an implement to break balls is pretty quantifiable, surely? It's designing a cue that propels the white ball the fastest down the table. The hit of a playing cue is going to vary according to personal preference, so is hugely subjective - I cannot see the same principles applying to a break cue.

Why isn't there a standard break cue, one that's proven to break the balls better? There must be a template for all break cue manufacturers to follow?

Yes, I have one. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Mezz PBII - I'm trying to determine whether it's worth the extra money. I have no way of trying one out - or any other model for that matter - so am curious as to why they're five times the cost of my J&J.

I have had several of the break cues mentioned here and I personally think my OB break cues is easily the best I have ever hit with.

It's a fickle game. The same way there is no standard for a shooting cue. Its all up to the individual user for a preference. There are some cue makers that just have it down.

Lomax, Gilbert, Gulyassy, Mace those are just a few guys that just have it down. I recommend finding something that's within your budget and that makes you happy.

I have a TNT solid purpleheart dedicated break cue and I'm very happy with it. Got it for just under 200 too.

Kevin Varney

Varney, his breakers just seems to annihilate the rack no matter what table I play on,and his players takecare of the rest!Great cues:)
