Ferrule glue experiment

Been having much better results now.

I replaced the factory ferrule on my cue with a new Tomahawk ferrule.

At SBE one year. A collector makes a comment while looking at a shaft - "ehh, you can see the glue line at the ferrule... I don't like to see that". A VERY well known cuemaker (won't mention the name) overhears this and chimes in - "I WANT to see the glue line... that way I know the glue is everywhere inside that ferrule".

Little off topic, but I thought some people might get a laugh out of it. The guy was kind of speechless and seemed to change his tune and thoughts about the glue line right then and there.

I had an idea and decided to try an experiment. Thought I would share. I have seen some great seamless ferrules. Most people say use epoxy. Some say wood glue if you can do super clean threading.

Currently I do not have live threading capabilities. Using epoxy with slip-on or compression threads often leaves a visible glue line. The ferrule is flush and as tight as possible. There is nothing wrong with the ferrule, it is just a visual problem. From experience and reading AZB, the end grain absorbs the epoxy and creates the line.

I had two ideas.
  1. Use wood glue to seal the end grain to block the epoxy.
  2. Add white resin pigment to the epoxy to blend it in.
I glued 4 ferrules
  • Just epoxy
  • Wood glue seal and epoxy
  • White epoxy
  • Wood glue seal and white epoxy
They are not super pretty since I didn’t sand to finish quality. I just wanted to see the line.

Result
  • Epoxy as usual has a visible line
  • Wood glue seal at first appeared to not work. I noticed the ferrule did not seat flush while clamped.
  • White epoxy looks way better, but it also may have been slightly off.
  • Wood glue and white epoxy looks the best
Unfortunately I had to leave for a tournament and in my rush I did not verify the ferrules were flush. I plan cut off and redo the two to be sure. Can I just use the wood or just the white or is both better?

Devcon 2 ton can be mixed with color. I believe that Gorilla glue has an epoxy that dries "white." Just some food for thought.
👍

Neil, you probably know the number on these.
But, I got them at the fb group.
Before that, I used to pay some $10 each for another brand.
This guy had deals on them .
Great for handle wrap shoulder work too.
Sharp on the finish .

I just got two boxes of those inserts and they work great. The only problem I've had is finding a right handed holder. I got a left but can't find a right one.

I've been satisfied with the Accusize 7 piece set (3/8") I got off Amazon a few years back. No issues with them. They also sell individual holders on their website (not on Amazon that I could find). https://accusizetools.com/en-us/collections/indexable-turning-tools I use a CCMT right handed holder but they also sell a VBMT variant.

BTW the sets are quite a bit cheaper on amazon. But they increased in price by 150% in the last 5 years. Ouch.
