Ferrule material

Hi, looking back I think I asked about twelve things too many in my last post. I'm just making my first purchase from atlas but I am a little confused about the different ferrule materials that they list.

I want to get what I'll need to supply any clients that come my way. I don't know of a single person in town that has a custom cue. Most are Mcdermotts, falcons, etc. all production cues.

What kind of ferrule material do these cues have from the shop?
and what other materials should I be getting. LBM, Aegis II, ...

Atlas lists:
Aegis II
Ivorine 3
LBM
MCB
MPI
Titan
VFT

I have no idea what these are in reference to cotton fiber, phenolic, etc that I read about in past posts. Can anyone educate me a little on what I should be getting or what these acronyms mean at least. Thanks a bunch for any replies...

oh, and they offer it in rod form and per ferrule, what should I do! I need serious help :) I really appreciate any replies, Thanks

Hi Matt; Don't waste your money stocking every material or tip made. 90% of your customers don't know what they have or want. If they do ask for a specific material & you ask them why they chose that particular one, they most likely will say that that's a name they've heard of, that was supposed to be good. They will most likely go with what you suggest. Most will come with an $80 -$150 Chineese cue that has a split ferrule or missing tip. If you question they're choice, they only want something STRONGER, so that it won't crack again. Little do they know, that the same material with a thicker wall will probably do the job.

OK, with that said here is what I would recommend. Buy 1 1/4" fiber ferrules, with a .250 hole. That way you can fix most bar Qs reguardless of ferrule length. This ferrule will also be a main stay for many 2 piece Qs as well. The 1/4" hole size allows you to drill or bore, any size hole you need. Buy the MP Ivory Substitute rod by the 3 ft sections. Here again you can substitute this for most of the cheap Chineese ferrule materials. Again you can go one drill size smaller & trim the tenon to fit & you'll strengthen the ferrule quit a bit with no noticeable change in the hit, but the customer will think you're a god, because it didn't crack like his "old one" did. Now get a 3 foot piece of Ivorine(II or III or whatever number strikes your fancy). These 3 ferrule materials will take care of what you need to start. Oh by the way, you will find that when the customer needs a tip or ferrule & you don't have what he wants, he will take what you have, because they have to have it back for "TONIGHTS MATCH OR TOURNAMENT"(they don't like to wait). Same goes for tips. Just get a box of ELKMASTER, LE PRO, WATER BUFFALO, a hand full of MEDIUM LAYERED TIPS & you're ready to start. Right now I have 16 different tips & I'll be damned if somebody will walk in & ask for the ONE I don't have. THEY WILL TAKE WHAT YOU HAVE. If you get several people ask for the same thing, you can always order a SMALL number of what they want.
Hope this helps...JER

Matt, I like LBM.
It is hard and powders off when you cut it and needs to be sealed just after cutting and before sanding.
Use a fast drying sanding sealer or thin super glue otherwise you will get black spots and streaks.
The MP Ivory Substitute is PVC and players that like a soft hit will like it.
You can get that from Chris Hightower as a threaded and caped ferrule or from Atlas as a rod.
From what I have heard, Joe Porper sells some nice ferrules that are easy to cut and dont have the tiny holes in them like Ivorine, LBM, and others.
I am trying Ivor-X and so far like the way it cuts and looks.
Havent hit with it yet.

Almer how much do you charge for a ferrule installation?...JER

I charge $20.00 for a reguler threaded or unthreaded ferrule with lepro or elkmaster.

Damn, I get 35.00 for a ferrule, a standard tip (Elk Master, Triumph, LePro, Triangle or Water Buffalo), clean and polish shaft and guarantee the ferrule for life. Of coarse different markets will bear different prices. When I do tournaments I raise my prices by 5.00.

must be the lowest price in the country.:)
raise it to $30 at least.

Now that i think of it i have not raised my price in a long time,i still do house cues for $7.00,what is the going price for a house cue?

$7's not bad with a minimum of 10 cues.

What glue do you normally use on house cues? I use 454 on all of my tips but it doesn't seem to hold real good on fibre ferrules such as Dufferon. When they come back the leather from the tip is still attached to the tenon but the tops of the ferrules themselves have chalk on them as if the tip wasn't glued onto the ferrule itself.

They do like to do that. I use duro gel, and It works alright, but have not found the perfect glue yet. They are fibre as far as I can tell, but I don't remember fibre being that bad. I have also had the tenons stick out pass the ferrules in the past, and push the tip off so to speak. For the most part these days I'm getting leather left on both ferrules & tenon, but ocasionally still get one that has done that.

Threaded Jer?

I'm a bit surprised by your mention that you install threaded ferrules Jer. I guess in other posts you were just stating your preference as opposed to installing non-threaded exclusively.
I'm just remembering a time recently that you said threaded was weaker than non. On what occasions do you install threaded over non? Gene

On a repair,if the shaft already has a threaded ferrule, I try to replace it with the same type OR if the customer requests it. I also believe that Ivory ferrules should be capped, but some customers don't want it that way...JER

I use mostly 454 but i have used a brand called hot stuff also for a long time with excellent results even on house cues, lot cheaper than 454,comes in 3 thicknesses.
