Ferrule materials: hardness vs. weight

People are saying that lighter ferrule materials cause less squirt. People also say they like the feel of this ferrule material or that ferrule material based on the perceived hardness of the hit. I'm not a materials engineer, but I believe that a material's hardness and density are two unrelated properties. For example, lead is a heavy, but relatively soft, metal. I'm not sure if people discuss these distinctions together and how they might affect your choice of ferrule material. Any general observations and comments on the subject?

Specifically I'm wondering what ferrule material would be light and give a medium hit (not too hard, and not too soft). I think Titan is OK, in that it's light, but too soft maybe.

Thanks
Don

PVC and ABS are both light and soft as well, though they seem to be considered, like titan to be too soft as well. based on mr. varney's review, juma would be in that catagory as well. Mr. Dzuricky of dz custom cues also was kind enough to put together a chart of some common ferrule matierals comparing thier weights to maple @ http://www.dzcues.com/ferrule_weight_comparison.htm

We've talked about this many times & I always come back to the fact that the "HIT" is a factor of the shaft taper, ferrule material & tip hardness. What tip are you planning on using in combination with this light ferrule, to get a medium hit?...JER

Hi Jerry, nice talking to you again. I don't know that I want a medium hit overall, just asking about a medium hardness ferrule material. To answer your question though, for those reading this, I like Triangle and Sumo tips.

If you are looking for a "medium" hit...go with the Triangle you like & ditch the Sumo. Sumo's are brittle water buffalo & one of the harder hitting non-layered tips.;)
