Hussa dear cumakers :-)

I would be interested in informations about ferrule-materials. Researched a bit here and there but not really the kind of informations i was looking for.
I ve read about Micarta, AEgis, Ivorine, Ivory etc.
Could somebody describe me about the abilities of theses materials and where the difference is?
I prefer to ask the craftmen :p

thx in advance,

Ingo

Porper, Titan, Fibre, LBM, Saber-T, Ivory, MasonH's new yellow Micarta, G10, black and brown phenolic, Juma, and MPI. That's just what I stock. There are many more types.

Differences are all across the board, hardness, color, weight, how it cleans up, does it resist chalk, ect.

I would ask a more detailed question if you have one, as it's hard to speculate what you're wondering about. Below I will describe a few that I use.

New Yellow Micarta - This is my favorite, lighweight, a nice medium hard hit, only downside (to some people) is the light yellow color, otherwise this stuff is the nuts, IMO.

LBM - The stuff I currently have is not a real bright white, but still white enough. It hits hard, stays fairly clean, heavy, and has held up good.

Titan - Bright white, lightweight, have had a few crack, soft hit. Stock this mainly for predator repairs that aren't covered under warrenty. It's decent.

Juma - Ivory colored, medium/medium soft hit, polishs real nice. I like the hit of this, seems to be a medium weight. I've only installed a few of these on cues I built. The color turns some people off (everyone around here wants bright white). Hits nice.

Porper - My most installed ferrule. Bright white, polishs decent, holds up well, nice medium hit.

I get a lot of the cheaper cues in with crap ferrules, so that is why the Porper is my most installed. On the better cues I replace with the same kind of material that was on there, unless the owner requests something different.

On my cues, I tend to go with the micarta, but use different materials based on what my customer is looking for hit wise, or if they can't stand the yellow color. In those cases, I normally go to the Porper.

This is just my opinion on the materials, I'm a rookie compared to most of these guys, so take it however you'd like.

thx both men :-)

nice link ScottR.

I m still thinkin about what kind of ferrule would be my fav- in the 90 s i prefered porper. But now it s long ago i saw them (end of 90 s til 2009 was away from pool).
What exactly is with Micarta? Read just that is far more expensive than other stuff (except ivory or so).

And after i played an OB-1 shaft i must say- that this *wooden-ferrule* has something. Just lookin a bit funny^^

thx guys,

Ingo

Milky White Micarta?

I picked up a block about 2.5-3 inch sq. by about 6inch long of this material. It may be too transparent to use. Any ideas? Thanks, Bob H.

I use Titan mostly. It's lightest and whitest. I do them uncapped. Not too soft that way. Polishes nice and doesn't hold chalk. I've never had one break.

I guess on predators anything that thin sleeved on has a chance of failure.

I think the Masonh micarta is the best replacement material for the 314-2 shafts, and it hits real good capped or not. IMHO--Leonard

Target
I.noticed you didn't include the Saber T ferrule. WhT do you think.of them performance wise and Why are they made of.
Thanks.
