Ferrule tolerances

I started reading this thread this morning but didn't have time to post.
My thoughts at the time were pretty much along the lines of what Eric said.
In other words, I tend to agree with him. Also, I saw the pic of the rings.

To criticize the work is setting yourself up. As stated, you might not know or
understand why something might have been done a particular way.
Everyone of us does things differently. As Lex suggested, this may not be orig.
We don't know.

As to the ring pic, a little discretion should have been put into play.
That ring-work is by no means common, quite unique actually.
It would take the right person less than a minute to name the builder.
To stir the pot a little, has anyone besides Ryan seen the ferrule on a Meucci Power Piston?

Professionalism is an acquired skill, just like installing a wrap properly.

I have the utmost respect for you Eric, and have always agreed with most of what you have had to say, but I don't agree on this. I understand that we aren't supposed to bash other cue makers, and I don't think that I did, but in this quote, you are calling us hacks? You haven't even seen any of our work first hand but you turn to name calling because some of us are a bit critical of the method used on this ferrule? I'm a bit confused as to how its ok for you to do this, but we can't express our disagreement on a method.
I personally don't do my ferrules this way, and this result is a good reason why. IMO, if it was a great way to do it, we wouldn't be discussing it as it wouldn't have failed. This should be taken as a lesson on how to improve so it doesn't happen in our own work.

I never directed the post toward you. And I have no issue with anybody disagreeing with a method. What bothers me is when a solid builder is ridiculed by someone who doesn't know anything about what he was doing. It's one thing to open an inquisitive discussion about something like this, and something else to begin passing judgement on the builder. Even worse is seeing somebody bring to question other areas of his cues, insinuating that he's sloppy everywhere.

This was part of what I meant. The design is not a sloppy, failed, goof-up of a careless builder. It's a tried & true method not unique to the builder in question. I recognized it immediately for what it is, and was surprised to see it mistaken as sloppy work. The surprise turned to agitation I guess as I read through the posts. Like I said, I have been on the other end of that blind criticism & it's annoying when my cue buyers come to me with questions about my work, because of what their repair guy told them as he was changing a tip. My cues should speak for themselves without me having to explain why I did what. Ignorant babble plants a seed of doubt, whether warranted or not.

The one that confuses me is when the tenon is not concentric to the shaft. I always wonder how this comes about.I have seen them 0.4mm offset or another way, a 0.8mm throw.
As qbuilder has stated, it's often just an illusion, because of threading. On unthreaded tenons, it's usually because the ferrule was put on long before the cue was turned to final size, and due to the wood moving, or the centers moving, or being turned without being on centers, the tenon moves.
