Ferrule

Question about ferrule replacement.

Just had a call to replace current ferrule with a buffalo horn ferrule.
The shaft is a wooden Meuccui that has been turned down to 11 mm.
All the jobs I done have been 12mm and up.

The customer says he has the tip and ferrule coming in the mail today.

My question is will I have enough side wall on the ferrule vs tenon for this job to not crack in the future.
Thanks

The tennon is 5/16, so a bit shy of 8mm
That leaves you 3mm, not much, but it should work, not sure how tough buffalo horn is though...

It will break.
I wouldn't do it. If he insists on a black ferrule, I would use a black Juma with a 3/16 cap.

horn

Buffalo horn is continually drying. It expands and contracts continually. I made knife handles out of it in the past. It always cracks. If you do decide to do it to appease the customer - spin it on the lathe at a medium speed, and put a few drops of mineral oil on a small patch of rag - apply slight pressure and work it in. Advise the owner to put a drop on every 4 - 6 months also.

I've not had any that have cracked to date, but have not went down to 11 mm either.

Best of Luck,
Alan

Treat it just like you would an Ivory ferrule install. I would solid cap it and put on a fiber pad.

Ok thanks for all of the info.
Great place here where some of us can learn a lot from folks that have been down the road. Before us.
