There are different types of ferrules, such as fibre, ages II, Ivorine III, Ivory, and so forthe. How do you know which ferrule to put on which customers stick, especially when the customer doesn't know what he or she should have. I would appreciate any insight.
 
You put your own personal choice on it then. Or are you asking for a complete rundown on different ferrule types?

My question is, if a customer needs a ferrule replace on a joss,viking,cuetec, mc dermott, scorpion, etc. How would you know which ferrule to use with what shaft?

This is a very good question!! The easiest way to find a Ferrule suited for an individuals type of play is to simple ask them what type of hit they like.

If they like a soft hit PVC or a fiber material would be best. If you want a hard hit then the Ivorines and Ageis is best. However, most people do not understand that by requesting a soft hit also sacrifices durability in most cases.

I think Chip's question is which type of ferrule material comes standard on the different cues, that way he can replace it with the original material.
 
Thanks, another question would be, which ferrules are harder, and which are softer, in order.

If that's the case then you're just going to have to learn to identify them visually. If you're allowed the benefit of a cut-pass test that will also help you. Although, I know of at least 3 production made cues that claim to use Aegis but the problem is, while they do share SOME Aegis properties, they all cut differently. Apparently they are all using different sources. DUH!!LOL.

Anyway, if you're making a list you know that McD. uses Ivorine, Meucci uses implex (or any variety thereof), Pechauer, Joss & Lucasi each have used a form of Aegis,etc. etc. Maybe others here would like to add to the list.

If you're just looking for a good replacement for just about any cue, LBM would be my choice. It would be an upgrade for most.

Addendum
Since I've made reference to LBM here, I've had several inquiries asking if I would sell some rod or ferrules. I have less than 2 ft left and will not part with any. My remaining stock is reserved for my own cues.

However, I've been told that Atlas still has a supply of finished, capped LBM ferrules in stock. Get `em while you can.

Story : A reader of this thread called my shop today while I was out asking about LBM so my ans. mach. fielded the call. He stated his name and proceeded to talk about searching for LBM and so forth for longer than what my mach. wanted to listen so it apparently cut him off before he could leave his number. So if you are reading this, sorry. That's why I didn't get back to you. My ans. mach. has no manners.

It boils own to personal preference and the type of "hit" the customer is looking for in the shaft....

The ferrule is one of the main components that directly effects the sound "harmonics" playability, and hit of the cue....

For example: ABS ferrules produce a quiet softer hit and sound, where aegis ferrules produce a louder harder hit and sound... each ferrule's composition plays a part in the overall equation and if you are undecided with what feerule you need or want then please contact your closest cuesmith and discuss what type of feel and hit you are wanting and he will match that up with the exact ferrule to assist with that aspect of it....
