Well I have this desire to understand everything about pool and its equipment. I recently have been adding alot of infasis on ferrules and joints. This got me thinking....

Iv tried several differnt types of ferrules.
1. Phenolic ferrule
2. Ivorine 4
3. Linen based melamine
4. Aegis linen
5. Ivorine III
6. Ivory
7. OB2 wood ferrule
8.314 pre cat ferrule
9.314 cat ferrule

I also have a break cue that has an odd ferule material that almost melts as I drag it on the cloth during my break. I also just got some old paper based micarta ferrules to try.

My quesiton to the forum here is what other materials should I try out and how would you guys rate the hardnes of ferrules? Pics would be appreciated.

Thanks guys.

I don't know what it is, but I am a fan of the laminated maple ferrule that comes standard on the OB-1 and OB-2 shafts.

OK, you've got a nice list of ferrule mtrls. started but where are you going with it? I mean, what are you looking for, harder, softer, lighter, heavier? There's probably another 1/2 doz. or so that you haven't listed.

I also need to state that the ferrule is not the 'be-all/end-all' that makes up the hit of a cue. Every component of a cue adds to the hit.
The ferrule has a strong influence but then so will the tip.
Tell us what you want to achieve and maybe we can zero you in a little better.

BTW, there is NO difference btwn the 'cat' & 'pre-cat' ferrules. Actually, there's no difference btwn those shafts at all except the decal.
Now, there is a difference btwn the Gen1 & the Gen2 shafts and their respective ferrules but you can't get those ferrules anyway. Predator doesn't have the Gen1 ferrules any longer.

Correct the hit of a cue varys depending on many factors. joint, ferrule, tip, shaft material, construction, and taper, as well as the butt design, full splice, half splice etc all can make a cue hit different. My goal is to try as many of all of these types as possible to figure out what I like. I used to think I liked my Academy cue. Then my Mcdermott was just as good as any custom cue. Then I decided I wanted my perfect cue. So to help me in this predicament I want to try everything. Maybe I want a harder hit but maybe I need a softer hit.

Currently I play with a Joss butt and a first gen pre cat 314 shaft or OB-2. The Pre cat 314 shaft uses a 6 piece laminate construction with a hollow core, It was way ahead of its time but for some reason got knocked off by the softer hitting 10 piece laminate construction. I agree the ferrules probably are the same product. They are definitly the same length. I just didnt know....

For breaking I used to like a standard sized cue with a maple shaft. Then I decided a mock custom of the icebreaker would be best with a purple heart shaft. Then I decided that a lighter break cue was better and know im using an 18.3 ounce cue with a lyptus shaft. (thanks BHQ)

What im realy saying is I want to try all the materials out and figure out the possible advantages of each of them. Hopefully I can learn what jumps best for me or what I absolutly hate, etc, etc....

I would realy like to gain all the information out there, I want everyones thoughts on soft hit, med hit, hard hit, and any opinions they may have. If I could be so lucky.
