Filipino Sports Competitors

My boyfriend has a good friend in Las Vegas who hosts many famous boxing greats at his establishment when they are in training for an upcoming match.

Manny Pacquiao is a Filipino boxer who's got a strong following in Philippines. He also is friends with many of today's great Filipino pool players and has been known to make an appearance at various billiard events from time to time.

In doing a little reading about this Filipino boxer, I came across this story entitled "Four Big B's of the Sport" in Philippines: boxing, billiards, bowling, and basketball: http://www.txtmania.com/trivia/basketball.php

I was not aware that basketball was big in Philippines and found this bit of trivia interesting, considering I hadn't seen very many tall Filipino basketball players. However, I guess height is not the only trait one needs to be proficient in basketball. Rather, it is the drive to win that is the most important. Filipino sports competitors are increasing in numbers in recent times and have a strong presence in today's sports world.

Last year, Manny Pacquiao was named "2006 Fighter of the Year" for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Erik Morales and his dominating 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion and current number-one contender Oscar Larios. This hard-hitting Filipino southpaw has only lost once in his last 21 bouts, a close decision in 2005 to Morales in their first encounter.

Marco Antonio Barrera will fight Manny Pacquiao this Saturday, October 6, at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here's a picture we received last night from Keith's friend in Vegas of Manny practicing for this upcoming match.

Like his pool counterparts, Manny travels with a strong contingency of Filipinos friends. I'd like to see him do well this weekend and just thought I'd share a few pics. It is refreshing to see a country like Philippines support their great champions, whether it be Efren Reyes or Manny Pacquiao. :)

BTW, Jose Parica used to be a boxer in his younger life, too!

Thnx for the pic and article Jam.
Pacman comes from the same town Leonardo Andam came from.
Plays pool a ton when he is not training.
He might be the biggest pro gambler in the Philippines outside of the pro players.

Manny will be hosting a Manny Pacquiao Int'l 9-Ball Open with a total cash prize of Php2M. This is scheduled on Oct. 24 to 27. This is just before WPC. We will know who will go deep amongst the pinoys before WPC starts. :)

Manny is one tough competitor. I'll be watching the fight this weekend. Go MANNY! :)

Check out out this picture. He's a man on a mission! :)

I'd kill to have those six-pack abs.

This will be a tough fight for both.

Manny still has to make weight.

As a Filipino, my prayers are for Manny to win. ;)

Great pics Jen! Here's my share, pics from their press con 3 days before the fight!

Basketball is HUGE in the Philippines - especially in the provinces where no one is able to afford much.

Manny is THE single biggest celebrity in the Philippines now. He's mobbed with fans everywhere he goes. He's a movie star as well. In the HBO Special that was shown after the Middleweight Championship last Saturday night, they intimated that Manny's stardom has caused him not to train according to schedule, and showed concern in the camp of Manny's American trainer, the great Freddy Roach.

Marco Antonio Berrera is a Mexican Champion at the very end of his career. This is his last big payday and his only chance to retire as a victorious champion. His proud Mexican fighter tradition has him VERY motivated to work hard and win. He has been training at high elevations and is definitely well prepared. I can't say the same for Manny, but he has youth, talent, and extraordinary fierceness on his side. I'm still betting on Manny Pacquiao.

By the way Jennie, Manny has a very strong following here in the USA as well. He's one of the most popular boxers, among Americans and Filipinos both. His humble nature, similar to Efren's in many ways, while at the same time being absolutely exhilirating to watch makes him a crowd favorite...Tom

THE deadly duo of Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante will be joined by Ronato Alcano, Dennis Orcollo, Warren Kiamco and Lee Vann Corteza to lead the Philippine charge at the start of the P2 million first ever Manny Pacquiao International 9-Ball Open.

The venue will be the Hobbies of Asia Bldg. in Macapagal Avenue in Pasay City on Oct. 24 to 27 and the payout will be a total pot prize of P2 million with the winner taking away the whopping top prize money of P1 million while the runner-up gets P500,000.

This was bared yesterday by RP's no. 1 trick shot player and tournament director Julie Falcon Guevarra.

Filipino: "Nag confirm na maglalaro sina Efren (Reyes) at Django (Bustamante) ng Puyat Sports. Sasali din sina Ronnie (Alcano) at Dennis (Orcollo) ng Bugsy Promotion maging sina Lee Vann (Corteza) at Warren (Kiamco) ng Negros Billiard Stable. Lahat kasi sila ay mang-gagaling pa sa US Open then diretso dito sa 1st Manny Pacquiao International 9-ball Open bago maglaro sa World Pool Championships," explained by tournament director Julie Guevarra.

English: Reyes and Bustamante on the other hand, both prized fighter of RP billiard patron Aristeo "Putch" Puyat, are scheduled to defend their title when the 2007 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool gets going on September 25 to September 30 at the Outland nightclub in Rotterdam, Holland.

English: Tournament director Julie is expecting more than 100 cue artists who will take part in this event that features some of the world's best pool sharks.

Fillipino: "Open sa lahat ito, inaasahan ko na mahigit sa 100 billiard player na mang-gagaling pa sa ibat-ibang panig ng mundo ang sasali. Timing ang date bago mag World pool Championships," he added.

English: The forthcoming 32nd Annual U.S. Open set on October 14 - 20, 2007. This event will be held again at the beautiful Chesapeake Conference Center, in Chesapeake Virginia while the World Pool championships will return again in our country on November 3 to 11 at the legendary Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City with the champion taking home the lion's share of US$100,000.

Solar Sports, the leading Sports channel will air the Manny Pacquiao International 9-ball Open. Interestingly, Solar Sports also won the rights to air the mega buck fight of Pacquiao vs Barrera on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It shall be recalled, last December, unheralded Benson Palses won the Manny Pacquiao Panersera-Pababa 10-ball tourney at the Rock and Roll billiard hall in Malate, Manila while Roberto Gomez dominates the Manny Pacquiao 10-ball Open in General Santos City last February.

English: For inquiries, call or text at mobile no. (0918) 319-0414 for complete details.

Looks like it's going to be a GREAT pool event! :)

Thanks, Joey.. .Nice Pic.

Was this the fight he lost because of his socks? I heard he avenged that defeat already. Is this true?

Here's another Manny picture taking this week during training. In this shot, he's relaxing between practice sessions! :p

Look at those leg muscles. He's solid as a rock!
