I am in the process right now of costing out and building one for myself. If you are interested, I can build 2 or 3 at the same time. PM me if interested. Russ

I just noticed that you wanted sprockets and chains. I am building mine with belts. Just wondering why you would want sprockets and chains and not belts. If still interested, let me know.

The one in the picture I built originally with the belts and found that it really needed the chain drive to keep all the cues spinning properly. I believe I mentioned that when I posted the pic which is probably why he requested it that way. You could get by with the traction belts if you could find them and the geared sprockets to match but good old chain and sprockets are the best. The hardest part is finding affordable bearings. https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2348022300375691&item=1-1869&catname=powerTrans

Belts slip, if not right away, then as soon as they stretch. Chain and sprockets don't. I will be switching to chains as soon as I get the time to research a source of the parts.

It's very true that vacuum cleaner belts lose some efficiency as more spindles are added but I've been using mine with 5 spindles, but now with just three as I added a UV light system on the bottom, for well over 10 years with no problem what so ever. Of coarse sprockets and chains will insure no slippage but it will also add about 25.00 per spindle for the much more expensive parts plus the aggravation of getting the chains to the correct length with half/links and master links and such. Instead of making one delrin pulley for about 3.00 and a .75 belt per spindle you have to buy 2, 8 or 10.00 sprockets and the chain. I had thought of changing them many years ago but figured it worked well the way it is so why mess with it.

Why not add a belt tensioner? It would be cheaper. Belts are cheap.
Just a thought..

I built mine with chain and sprockets

I purchased the bearings and chain/sprockets all from: https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.a...ame=powerTrans. The same company another AZer recommended for bearings. It was very inexpensive. I think I bought one length of chain and split it up to fit my needs. I also enclosed the chain drive to keep dust off the lightly oiled chains. I attached a few pics. This was roughly patterned after the unit in C.Hightower book. I made it free standing with a shelf on the bottom. Never found a need for doors, as the room is clean and water based finish dries fast. The blower is a cheap harbor freight dust collector that I adapted with a plumbers rubber pipe sleeve. It moves plenty of air outside of my house when I am spraying. I shut if off after it tacks up as the finish is totally non toxic.

I really like your booth. I would like to make one observation though. Most Water Based finishes are not totally non toxic. They are very low toxic compared to other finishes, but they are still toxic. Most have drying agents in them that can cause lung and eye problems. If you can smell them after you turn off your blower I would advise getting a lower power motor and keep the air flowing outside.

And something else that would have to stay in adjustment to be effective. The belts slip even more if any over spray gets on them. This surprised me a bit actually, I thought that as sticky as the clearcoats tend to be, overspray might even help, but after having a cue with abunch of sags on it due to slipping belts I went to the sprocket & chain and have never looked back! The sprockets and chain are actually not that expensive if you investigate the previous link I posted for the bearings. I do prefer my design with 2 bearings spaced about 5 inches apart and the shafts are drilled with set screws to change the delrin pieces of different threads for the different pins. I also have short pins I thread into the delrin pieces to attach a shaft so it can be sprayed at the same time as the butt.

very nice booth!!!

Yea belts are cheap, but time is not when you have to fix the mess after a belt breaks or slips while your off doing something else. I finally got mine working pretty reliably right now, but I still keep watch over it, and therefore get nothing else done:frown:
Olson, that's a great setup, I like it.

It's really immaterial to me how someone designs their machine as they will be the one using and paying for it. I can only tell my experience using belts and that is that I have never, in over 10 years and putting a finish on probably more than 700 cues in that time, have had a belt break nor slip enough to affect the finish. I've changed a belt 4 or 5 times over the years but the belt is going to get deep cracks so that it looks like it will break at any second, many, many hours before it does break. That should be plenty enough warning to slip on another belt which, if it takes more than 30 seconds, means you stopped to eat a sandwich. If the belt slips enough so that the cue will not spin then the belts are to large of a diameter for the machine they are being used on.

spray booth

If you are going to use water based why not just make a dipping tank and hang saves lots of time and money if not over build the booth on the exhaust side
