Since Shane Van Boening is in the news and he just beat Corey Deuel at 10 ball, I thought it might be interesting to some of you what Shane once told me.

Just so it isn't taken out of context, he was visiting New Orleans and I asked him how he aimed. At first he didn't know what I was asking and was taken aback momentarily. So I said how do you aim at THAT ball to pocket it in that hole, pointing to where I wanted him to pocket the ball. It was a one pocket shot. It has been a while. What I remember him saying was, "That is a quarter ball hit".

Does this mean Shane exclusively uses a 6 point fractional aiming system, similar to Hal Houle's aiming system? Is Shane in reality a Houligan?

could be . . .

Hard to say that he uses that system exclusively. I have found the fixed contact points to work better than I expected them to but they hardly seem to be the be-all end-all. I'm a little curious about tinkering with fixed aim points and different contact points on the cue ball though. This would require a person to know the characteristics of their cue stick's shaft very well but I could see it working.

Darn it Hu. Thanks for the reply but I had my sights on the Hal Houle fractional aiming system dissenters. The Fire Storm turned into not much more than a cloudy, hot summer afternoon. :D I always caught nice largemouth bass on a cloudy day using top water baits like the Lucky 13 but I guess I just wasn't using pinpoint casting.

FTR, I doubt that Shane uses a 6 point fractiional aiming system or a 7 or a 8 or a ...well you get the idea. :)

joey,,,it could also be that that's simply the way he sees a shot, and he may not have a system at all. personally, i think pocketing, in some varying level, is a gift,,,,and some people can just see the shot. i don't think great players need an aiming system.

he may describe it as a "quarter ball hit" but it could have been only a description to give you an answer. like,,"how do i aim? huh? oh well i just aim, but if you need an answer,,,it's just a quater ball hit"....cuz it sounds like he didn't even understand what you were asking at first.

yea Bruin, thats kinda what I got from it as well.

I had someone ask me how I aim and all I could say was.....I stand behind the shot and move back and forth from one side of the cb to the other til the shot feels right, then I get down and trust it. I will make adjustments when down on the shot for inside/outside. For me sometimes shots look wrong when I'm down on em, so I have to trust my preshot.

I guess that knack he had for making a guaranteed ball on the break with position on the 1 was a big part of his game, and 10 ball took that away.

Wonder if it'd go the same way if they'd played 9 ball, with the 9 racked on the spot.

Disagree

Corey would have beat him in 9-ball. 10 ball isn't his game. They should play another match.

When you are at the level Corey is, or even below a little, every game has to be your game.
