First Annual Tad Cup USA

Hard Times Billiards is hosting the first annual Tad Cup USA on the weekend of September 4th and 5th. Tad previously held the tournament every year in Japan (and it still goes on there) for the past decade or so, but had decided to hold one in the USA specifically geared towards amateurs. It is a Handicap tournament geared towards low-level A and below amateur (about 85 and under in USPPA which translates to maximum level of "12" in the tournament). Entry is $50 by August 27th, $75 after. First prize will be a 4-prong Tad Cue. Cash prizes will be for 2nd place on down. All sign ups get a free gift from Tad with paid entry. This tournament was originally aimed at Southern California players. As such, anyone mailing in an entry form must provide a copy of a government issued Photo ID and of a USPPA ranking, since that is the only system that I can currently convert to the rating system I use. If you are not ranked at a Southern California room or more specifically rooms local to Hard Times, you may be able to sign up but be warned, I reserve the right to pull any player deemed too good at any time. The player forfeits their entry money if that occurs. I don't care how long you haven't played pool in, my understanding is that no Handicap system is perfect, but I will settle for being fair the the greatest percentage of people as I can. You can reach me at my phone number listed or e-mail me at DetroitIron@gmail.com or samskim@csupomona.edu if you have questions. Contact me for entry forms as I can't upload the pdf due to its 3000kb size. Jpg image of flyer is attached.

Bumpin it up! Good stuff!

If anybody has got questions regarding this, call or e-mail me directly. I can already foresee the possible headaches, but when I was approached to do this tournament, it was my understanding that this is basically an experimental thing that is going to happen EVERY YEAR and the only hard part is finding a format that will work well. So for this year, I've settled on how you see it above and next year it might be something totally different. I've been approached by Ron Hoffman at propool.com and am looking over what he has to offer. Remember, I do tournaments as a side job, I work a normal 9-5 deal during the week, so if I don't pick up, leave a message. Also, BUMP.

Also, I overlooked the start times. Normal (for the Hard Times regulars) starting time of 1PM with Free Practice starting at 12pm. Note that matches will be scheduled. How well I stick to that schedule remains to be seen.

One week before the the deadline for $50 entry fees. If you're local to me and are interested in playing, give me a call or e-mail me.

Less than a week before the entry fee goes up to $75. Get them to me or anyone at Hard Times Bellflower on or before the 27th to only pay $50. Call or e-mail me directly, or call Hard Times at 562 867 7733 for more information and entry forms, and how to get a handicap established. Otherwise, unknowns will come in at the max, and may be booted at my discretion, forfeiting all entry monies.

Hmm, wonder why they won't let A players play? I would love to win a cue especially a Tad but it seems that they aren't allowing some people to play, isn't that what the handicap is for? Hmmmm.

Result: Nolan Simiano defeated Arthur Garcia 7-6 in the finals. He remained undefeated through the duration of the tournament (true double elimination). As for not letting A-players play, this was decided upon last year since the format of the TadCup in both Japan and Taiwan only allow amateurs to play. However, they do not handicap over there. But they also have a clearer distinction and a more unified system of ranking people in my opinion, than what we have here in the US (APA, USPPA, BCA, etc etc). Hence the determination for the need of the handicap system. Tad would like to make this a yearly event, and with a draw of 91 players this year, with all the mistakes I made, and some dissatisfaction I had with certain things, I would say the event was a success overall. This format may change for the next year, as this first one is an experiment, and the lessons learned here will be applied to try to make the next one better. I thank everyone who came out to support Tad and J&J this year. This was my last official tournament as Director of Hard Times Bellflower, and as such, everything that went wrong or right I bear responsibility for. I believe my goal of ensuring the majority of the people had a good time was achieved, because that's what it's supposed to be about for me.
