First Custom Cue

What was your first custom cue?

I started playing pool seriously at 15 years old and saved up to buy a Meucci Sneaky Pete. I thought that was the hottest thing going, and I paid at the time $181 brand new. Next I bought a plain jane Schon which at that time I paid $400 for (I was about 16 then I guess) and that was a ton of money to me (when I had to win/earn it). Johnny Archer was my hero at the time (and still is I guess) and I HAD to have a Schon cue, the company that Johnny was sponsored by. I babied that cue to death. I cleaned it up and carefully tucked it away every time I was done playing. Later, I needed some cash so I traded it for a Bludworth Sneaky Pete plus $275, and ended up liking the Bludworth better. Played with that a few years....and went through several other cues. More Schon's mostly.......

Then in 2002 (10 years later) my friend George took me to Tim Scrugg's shop. We stopped by some special fish place and bought crab sandwiches to eat (and of course took some to Tim and the two guys that work for him), and sat around eating, chatting...and I was of course admiring the cues in progress and the completed cues.

George told Tim I was interested in a cue...but at the time I didn't really think they would have anything DONE that I would want. I really wanted something close to a Szamboti style. Tim pulled out a book and showed me some stuff, and I kind of told him what I liked. He then went into a case which was casually sitting over in the corner, that held quite a few cues. He pulled one out and said, "Would this do?". I loved everything about it except the wrap. He offered it to me for a very good price, and immediately changed the wrap (after I coughed up the dough of course) and from there I had what I "count" as my first custom cue. It's the only one worth remembering (except the Bludworth, because the sneaky shot exceptionally well).

Later on, I wasn't playing much, so our local hero Don Purdy (one of the most trustworthy guys you could ever know) sold it for me (pretty quickly too I might add). Don, do you have a pic of that cue you could post? Now, when I am able to play, I shoot with the homliest looking Bob Frey Sneaky pete thing that was half created by Poukey (a great player who does weird stuff to his cues..LOL). It's ugly as sin and wouldn't scare anyone away...and shoots almost as good as the Scruggs.

I have been itching to buy a Schon SL24 (is that correct?), the "Playboy" cue. I see them on ebay from time to time. I really like the look of that cue, and I'm sure it shoots fine.

OK...that wasn't a very incredible story, but it's the story of MY first custom cue. What is yours?

Custom cues...

My first cue was a cheap Dufferin with what I guess was a 11-12mm tip on it. I was strictly a bar player at that time and when I decided to upgrade I gave that cue to an 8 year old kid who was pretty darn good. I then bought a Mali for $120, I think. I played with that cue for a while until I decided to get a nice Huebler (worked for a pool hall and got a discount since we were dealers for them). I sold the Mali for $70 and bought a $400 Huebler for $300. I played with this cue for a couple of years and, not knowing better, let friends borrow it and it got beat to shit. I ended up selling it to a friend for $100 when I decided to take a break.

A few months later the break from the game was cut short when the urge to play was overwhelming me...lol. I decided to look for a decent cue in the $500-700 range and ended up being talked into spending $1200 full retail on a DP, who later devalued his cues by flooding eBay with them, and a few months after that I got a Gilbert J/B for $350. At this point I started looking at custom cues online and learning about the different makers. I saw a Gilbert that I fell in love with on www.cueaddicts.com and purchased it. I would later sell the DP on eBay for a 50% loss. :( Shortly after that I found AZB and was introduced to Skip Weston’s cues. I decided to order my first "true" custom from him. I then saw a Skip on www.classiccues.com that I had to have so I sold my Gilbert on eBay and bought the Skip from Joe, before my custom one came in.

After I got my custom Skip I made a decision that I was only going to collect cues that I had either designed or had a hand in designing so I traded the Skip I bought from Joe for an in-the-works new Skip Weston. Before that, I saw a post in the Wanted/For Sale section about Edwin Reyes offering a series of 12 cues for a great price, with each cue being personalized by the buyer, so I decided to take advantage of that, this cue is in the works now as well.

Not too long ago I sold my standard Gilbert J/B and ordered a custom one. This brings us to last week when I placed an order with another cue maker whose cues I was introduced to here on AZB. When all of my cues get in I think I will have a nice little collection of actual custom cues!

Mine was a Nova. Nubs Wagner (the owner), in my opinion, might be one of the most underated cuemakers in the business. He made me a beauty with wildwood burl points that look like someone has bled on the wood. Swirly red that looks 3-D. Nub's finish is amazing. I've had the cue for four years and not so much as a ding (and trust me, I have banged it into a few different immovable objects!). It hits similiar to a Schon, but something about the dymondwood inserts that he uses on his shafts just makes the hit "feel" a little better to me. I have bought five more since then and Nubs has been working on an ebony and ivory for me for just over three years. He has closed his shop in Wisconsin and now resides in Kentucky, which has caused the process to take a little longer than expected. Great guy...

My next custom was from Bryan Mordt (BCM Cues). Beautiful ebony and ivory cue with sixteen delicate ivory inlays, ivory joint, ivory butt, etc., which can be seen on his website. Bryan is one of the real up and comers in cue world, and I think many of the folks on this chatline are familiar with his work. Hell of a good guy, too!

Now, I'm a hopelessly addicted cue guy that has more custom cues than the law should allow, but these are the ones that stick out in my mind...

My first custom cue! It was 46+- years ago. I learned to play pool at the local Boys Club (the same one Curt Shilling/Boston Red Sox pitcher went to - he went to the same grade school I did - but many several years later). Well I wasn't winning as much as I wanted so I figured if I could get a better cue than the broken down house cues I could win - very competitive even then. I was pretty good in wood shop so the Boys Club shop instructor helped me with the equipment and I made my own cue. And yes, I won with that new stick! Then I progressed to the local pool room, hustled, went to tournaments, played and beat some of the very best players out there, played with lots of cues, had a custom cue built for me by Gus Szamboti (with a heart inlay), got the bug to build cues, became a cuemaker. So it is funny, my first custom cue was built by a voting member of the American Cuemakers Association.

First Q I ever bought was a Schrager, it was 1972 ish, for $85.00 with Two Shafts. Sold it in 2004. Collector of Schrager’s now owns the Cue. :D

My first cue was a McDermott D-6 I bought for $60 in 1990. My first custom cue is my Wes Hunter I bought in 1996.

While I was sationed at MCRD, San Diego in 1967, I bought a cue off a man named Tex Wooley(think that's how you spell it) $35 and $10 for an extra shaft. When I got out of the service, I had the shafts re-tapered and lightened it up some. Played with it till 1984 when I quit playing, still have it. When I got back into the game last year, I used it until I bought a stick at the 2k4 Expo. I used it for breaking until I got a break stick, actually I think I break better with it. One of these days I might get the roll taken out of it :)

My first 2 cues were production cues. In 1984 the Air Force sent me to Louisiana and there I met Bill Schick. He built me an eight point cue with 2 shafts for a Whopping $400. Back then, his "low level" cues started at 300 with 2 shafts. When I think back now, I could kick myself in the ass for not buying more than one of his cues when I had the chance. If only I knew then what I know now..

I have two...COUNT'EM two Coker's on the assembly line as we speak! These will be my first custom cues ever!!! I'm getting a sneak-pete and a 4-pointer/hoppe style cue. Joyness! :D :D :D

My first custom was a Meucci which was stolen from me. I waited a couple of years before buying another cue. I bought a used Schuler. I really liked the hit.
Then I started taking lessons from Sailor and I asked him to make me a cue. I play with that now.
I also own 2 Ned Morris cues, a Ron Tragger cue and a Nitti sneaky. I plan to order an Ed Young this year...
yes, I have cueitis...lol

My first cue was a players plain jane .It cost me 40 bucks .And then it was all down hill from there.I met Andy Gilbert about 6 years ago and about 9 cue later I was playing with his cues ,Up till this year I now play with a Kennth Murrell .And this is the first cue that i've played with with no wrap . Going price 900 . But If i do stop playing with his cue .I'll go back to a Gilbert ..only ......But u can beat the hit on both of there cues ..And the work is sick .I'll Start gettin me some Gilberts and some Murrell to keep on the side ..

> My first decent cue was a old Meucci, black joint collars and butt cap,no logo, and the solid white wrap. This cue was well worn when I got my second Meucci,a gray stained 2 point with a black wrap. This cue was flat worn out when I got it's eventual replacement,a "Lance" or OL-5 model that had supposedly been made specifically for Jim Rempe, but he rejected due to too thin a butt. Nice bright caramel orange-brown stain, nice birdseye, unsealed white with black spot wrap and a white joint collar instead of the nickel silver joint commonly seen on the OL line. It came with 2 shafts, and I had Bill McDaniel make a 3rd and 4th shaft, slightly stiffer taper and Aegis ferrules. This cue was similarly worn out when my first Schon arrived. I ran 45 playing 14.1 right out of the box with it,and sold that Rempe Meucci with all 4 shafts for 20 bucks later that day. I've hit balls with close to 300 cues belonging to other people since then, and have only hit balls with 7-8 that come close to the hit and feel of my Schon, and none that hit good enough to replace it,although I really like the hit of steel jointed Searings and Gilberts. Tommy D.

My first custom was a Pechauer that I designed two years ago. I used the Pro J as my model and had my cousin, who is a multimedia engineer, design it on the computer. They are using it now in their new line of cues, which I think is pretty damn cool.

Im pretty proud of that. I wouldnt sell the cue for anything. Before that I had a production Mike Sigel which played awesome and right now I have a custom Omen.

My first cue was an Adam made by Helmstetter I bought for $50. Years later, not knowing any better, I bought a Kerella(aka Adam) for $350. My next cue was a really nice Schon worth about $1000. It was given to me by my best friend then later stolen out of my car. 6 yrs later (early '04) when I got back into pool, I bought a couple of Predator SPJs, one with a leather wrap, trying to find a cue I liked. Then I picked up a Schon STL8 and bought a predator shaft for it. I loved the way that combination played, until I hit with a couple of different Scruggs cues. I recently bought an 80s Scruggs, 2 shafts, 4 ebony points, 4 veneers, all in good condition. I spent alot of money looking for a cue I liked. Thank goodness I am single with no children.

I do want a custom cue designed to my specs; one made by Scruggs and another made by Herseck. I am currently on Joel Herseks 6 yr waiting list and I just contacted Tim Scruggs to be put on his waiting list.

Hey Danny, how long is Scruggs' waiting list nowadays ? Did he give you any estimation ? I love my Scruggs cue (see my signature) and I have previously owned a Capone cue, which was also nice, but not as lively as the Scruggs.

I think I might acquire a Gilbert and maybe a Zylr cue if I'm about to order a new cue. In my daydreams, I'd go for a Hercek, Bender, Schick or another but fancier Scruggs.

Hello mjantti
FYI:
I have an email from Tim Scruggs, dated April 6, 2005, stating that he is "not taking any new orders at this time due to a heavy backlog".
That may or may not have changed, but those were his words at that time.
Thanks

I emailed Tim a couple of days ago about ordering a cue and have not heard back from him. I will probably get the same reply. He usually replies with in 3 days. But now that I heard what Rocitop had to say, I will not be expecting good news. I was thinking about selling my Scruggs to get a newer one. I just might hold onto it now.
