First Joss cue impressions

The worst warped cue I've ever seen was a Joss that had the forearm finger-joined to the handle. That was a cue from the nineties.

I have been playing with Joss cues exclusively since the early 90's and have yet to find a better hitting/feeling cue. The closest I found was a Schon CX series but the Joss still prevailed. Dan Janes made me a one of a kind (black and white one in the pics), it has a 3/4 wrap which was originally white on black linen but I replaced with leather (rat tail lizard about 10 years ago). The one in the middle is an N-series cue (never could figure out which model but was told once it was an N-10 but they don't match exactly), and the brown is a Joss Sneaky Pete also with a 3/4 wrap brown spec linen. The one Dan made me in the late 90's replaced the one in the middle for me and I use the sneaky pete to break with and/or just sits in my bag as I also have a Jacoby break cue.

Anyway, I love the Joss Dan made for me, it has a REVO 12.4 on it now and I can't imagine using another cue.

sure it was Joss? all i've heard is they are all full length cored cues. i know Viking finger joins their cues together but not joss . never heard of Joss from the 90's warping much less from a a-joint they didn't use.

Positive it was Joss. We were all surprised because it was in great shape otherwise.

It was a very low end cue for them.

sure wish i'd seen it 'cause all J's from that era i've owned/seen were fully cored. No finger jointed forearms that i know of. still have big doubts it was a Joss cue.

I have 3 Josses I won’t sell…a ‘92 Sneaky Pete, an ‘86 Block Letter, and a first year Joss…’68
When I first met Danny Jane, he’d just watched me skunk a guy in a tournament….he told me he didn’t have a first year Joss in his collection…wondered if I would sell mine….I told him we do a trade…I get a half an hour in his shop with an empty truck…
….he grinned “I got a feeling you really like it.”

I bought a 4pt player with 2shafts(ivory ferrules) around '80-'81 for the princely sum of 162bux delivered. Wish i still had that bad boy. Oh well.

How do you know all of them were fully cored? Did you take the wrap off of every one? Did you x-ray each of them? I'd love to know how you can look at a wrapped cue and tell the internal construction method.

Dan started coring all his cues in the late eighties iirc. Except for maybe a sneaky-pete his cues have been cored since then. I sent Dan a msg to be sure on this. Never heard of him finger-joining a forearm together.

Good info. The finger joint was in the handle, maybe two or three inches below what would have been the a-joint. There were no rings. Maybe it was a knock-off, but it had the Joss logo.

Pretty cue. I own a current Gen N7, and the previous Gen with the Hope ring. Aside from three Sailor cues, Joss is all I own anymore. I love the consistency between cues.

a friend of mine bought a "joss" on aliexpress, it actually looked great. so yea there are credible knockoffs even of joss

Would a Lucasi cue be considered a quick release? Somebody I knew had one years ago and I unscrewed it which took about
two turns.
I think he was referring to a butt ext QR. And yes Lucasi used a lot of UniLoc which are a QR-style joint.

Not only does Joss produce fine cues, chatting with Dan is a pleasure. There is always more to a cue than the hit and that is the people that run the business. Cannot recall any negative comments about Dan Janes, that says a lot about him and Joss Cues!

Yeh, this wasn't a butt ext. And "Uniloc" refreshes my memory and that's what he said the joint was. Nice looking cue
and the hit/feel was quite good. Is Lucasi still making cues?

Dan Janes is a bookworm….he got the idea for his cue name from a James Clavell novel.
A Joss stick is a candle that’s lit in a Buddhist temple.

I have a 1968 JOSS block lettered logo as well... 2 shafts... still straight as an arrow... very solid feel. I did have to have the butt plug replaced and used a black one because we wouldn't find a brown one. This cue will never be sold... in fact I would love to find another 1968-1971 JOSS for my collection. (FYI also looking for a 60's Viking with a super joint and glass window logo)

If anyone knows of one for sale or trade, let me know please.

Thanks...

I love my Joss. I have two standard Joss shafts for it. One is 12.75mm and the other is 12mm. I have had the 12mm one for less than a year and it already has a roll in it. Communism

Joss has push in and screw in butt ext
Yeah that is super annoying. Those are designed as perm options. I don't have the room in my basement to play with a 64 inch cue at every angle. I want a quick-release butt extension. Every other cue company makes them. Have no idea why joss cant/won't.
