First person I've seen make this bank

Not me....

I cant make it from the rail, but can from 1 diamond away from the side rail. Its a hanger from the head spot...This goes to show why vernon was truly different than the rest - in precision.

I was practicing this shot last night but didn't even come close to making it.

According to this article by Bob Jewett, you should use extreme outside english for this shot.

I also posted a video of the shot (Youtube ID = bob95051) but it was made on really inferior video equipment. The reason that most people will never come close to the shot is that they never put that much side spin on the cue ball.

The shot has been discussed extensively before in at least two threads. Joe shoots the cue ball into the side cushion because his aiming fixture forces him to on this shot. It may be that shooting into the cushion helps the shot, but it's not clear. He certainly makes it from farther down the table than any reasonable person would ever expect.

Bob...Joe shoots the shot that way, because that's the way to make it. I watched him make the shot 3x in a row, moving the OB further past the side pocket each time. Hitting rail first is how Vernon made the shot too!

Scott, So are you saying that it is a "kick shot" By that I mean you drive the CB into the side cushion, then it comes across the OB? Makes sense, I would have never thought that in a million years. Thanks... JOE

I used to play a guy named Carey Cook when I was a kid....well mostly I would watch him play. He wrote a book called Take Your Diamonds to the Bank. On the last page was I think a 10 rail bank shot which he could make. It would take him a few tries and not because he was off line, but because he didn't hit it hard enough.

Joe...That's exactly what it is. Joe shot it with his Tucker Laser Trainer, and made it time after time...even moving the OB farther past the side pocket. He made the same bank, with the OB way down by the corner pocket, cross banking it into the other corner, about 8 times in a row. He shot it like it was a hanger! Of course, Vernon Elliot made the shot with no laser! :D Amazing shots!
