First taste of one pocket today

Racks on racks on racks

An older gentleman in his late 70's plays on one of my 8-ball teams. Last Thursday he was talking to me about his golden years of pool. He worked at Brunswick in the early 60's when Mosconi would come around the factory and demo on the tables. He mentioned Richie Richeson (sp?) And some other players that I've not heard of before. He splits his time between Arizona and Michigan.

Anyway we got to talking about 14.1 and I told him I couldn't find anybody to play with because I wasn't clear on a few rules and I didn't want to teach somebody how to play wrong. I also mentioned never playing one pocket before.

I told him I where I played on Sundays and he said he would be there. After a brief explanation of the basics, how to break and basic strategy we got into about a 3 hour game of one pocket. I know I could have done a lot better, but know I know how and want to play again!

We played 50 points of 14.1 and he was pleasantly surprised how I ran the table multiple times on him. The 50 point race only lasted about 40 minutes because I broke out and ran him a few times :). He said he would love to play more but had to tend to his wife and take her to dinner.

Needless to say I'd love to play more of each game and 14.1 is way more fun against an opponent lol!

It was a great day learning about each game, hearing his experiences with the games and to hear him talk about playing 9-ball the first time and how he thought it would never catch on lol!

Even tho he doesn't have access to here, I'd like to thank Bill anyway!

One pocket is a blast, isn't it? All kinds of shots come up that you just don't see in any other games. What I enjoy most about it is the need for strategy especially when taking the game up-table.

I've only played about a dozen sets, but I'm hooked. I just wish I had more people to play it with (my friends are as new to the game as I am).

one pocket dot org
in the main forum quite often there are layouts from matches of the pros where shot selections are discussed
and what the pro eventually shot
all things related to one pocket are discussed there
on the home page you can get news and there are lots of archived interviews with the legends of one pocket
check out the site and hopefully join
dont be shy in posting your shot choice
most of the members will "critique "your selection in a positive way
they are kind to newbies
only among the oldtimers do they call each other stupid for selecting a ridicullous shot:eek:
really ive learned alot overthere and never was made to feel like an idiot:smile:

Keep playing and enjoying. I'm just starting to find games with some neighbors. I'm hooked.

what he said....+1

over at 1P.org....when the oldtimers (read veterans who know stuff) start flaming each other...I duck...they can bring it:eek:

I play a little (newcomer too to the game)..I learn a lot there by listening/observing and everyonceinawhile posting a guess on the 'watchgoinado' threads.

...gotta love a game where getting close can be better than pocketing a ball..:D

..glad to hear someone else has been bitten by the bug..

It's another game that can for sure be added to playing opponents for fun once you get burnt out on 8 ball or 9 ball. I'm definitely signing up on the onepocket forum and going to learn the rules so I can bring it to the table with another person who hasn't played it yet.

I can't believe I haven't played this before...

Is there a variation against the ghost?

I would like to take time to thank you for your post-as i also am one of the old crowd-74yr-and counting, we might not stroke the stick as well as we use to, but we still have good momries. again thanks, as at our age to get a thank you it is like a medal to us GOD BLESS YOU!!!:thumbup:

Is there a variation against the ghost?

Not exactly the ghost, but I practice it alone sometimes,,,,,,,,just place a coin by the pocket you break to, slide the coin back and forth between pockets to keep up with your target, play the best shot you can find, as well as you can. I've had 8 and outs, as well as 5o minute defensive battles,,,,,,,,,,it's actually a pleasant way to practice.

1P has quickly become my favorite discipline.

Absorb as much as you can from great players and Accu-Stats videos. There are so many moves that you'll quickly see you can use in other games.

And ditto to the above for Banks.

I'm so sorry to hear about your One Pocket infection.

I was recently infected with the 1P virus as well.

I was always careful. Never thought I'd catch it... None of us did.

But here we are; Sick. There is no cure.

We all thought we were good players until we played our first game of 1P.

Then we realized that those who run 7 racks of 9-ball actually don't know how to shoot pool.

All the Live Streams and typical YouTube videos became boring and repetitive. (But we still watch them occasionally, with a melancholy lust for the days when we thought pool was that simple).

Even the spot terminology changed, from "7-out" to "two breaks and 10-6."

Suddenly, we had a hard time finding anyone willing to play.

Making a ball on the break became unusual and mind-blowing.

We changed from assuming we'd make every shot, to assuming we'd miss every shot.

The phrase "safety battle" began to seem redundant and unnecessary.

The phrase "but you don't understand how awesome that was" became more meaningful.

Terms like "race to nine" became unreasonable.

"Alternating breaks" were no longer a point of dispute.

Our rotational friends may mourn our absence, but we simultaneously dismiss them, and try to infect them with our disease.

If only they could be so lucky to catch this crazy virus.

Good luck, my friends. We are all in this together.

May your shots roll slowly and beautifully towards (but not necessarily into) your One and only Pocket.

It's SO TRUE! Once you play One Pocket and catch the bug, every other game looks like checkers in comparison.....

We all thought we were good players until we played our first game of 1P.
A few more...

"Playing shape" became an obsolete term, and was upgraded to "moving."

We learned that any ball can be made in any pocket, given the right amounts of spin and speed.

We were amazed that it could be so f$@&%#* hard to MISS a ball on purpose!!! Arrrrrggggghh!!!

:)

I believe I know the guy your talking about. I used to play him alittle in our friend Charlie's basement. Tell him mike from Muskegon say hi and I'm glad to hear he's still hitting'em

If you like one pocket then Bullshooters and Kolby's are good rooms to learn, plenty of good players in both rooms and most will play you cheap if you are a pleasure to play with. It sometimes can be tough playing new players to that game because they sometimes do not know what to do in certain situations and that can slow the game down so bad its not very enjoyable.

Welcome to the club of 1P addicts. I fell in love with the game long ago and wish I would have picked it up in the 60s when I first started playing. You will find it a very neat society to belong too. Get on the onepocket.org forum, I am one pocket Smitty on there. Have fun!--Smitty

Beginners have to start somewhere....and all beginners hold the process up. That goes for any Interests. For myself I will find someone to play with and pay the time. I do not want to learn anything by betting on it. But I'll pay somehow. Pay the table time or a pool related gift of some kind. I'll make the lesson or game worth while. However if I should teach anyone anything I'll do it for fun if they are sincere.
