How are you guys going about fixing major dents or minor cracks (like chips) in shafts?
When i say dent, imagine take a large grain of sand out of the shaft and that is what you are left with.

are you filling with anything then just blending it in?

thanks all,

PS. HEY DICKIE NEIGHBORS!!!!! i seen you do something like this YEARS ago on a friends cue when at apa event in eastgate so im hoping you will chime in here lol. Hope all is well big guy.

I lightly sand the shaft to open the grain and then wash it with bathroom spray cleaner to clean and raise the grain, I dry it with a heat gun while spinning. The moisture and heat takes out most of the small nicks. Then I coat it with sanding sealer (lacquer based Deft) and dry it with the heat gun. I sand most of the sealer off and it tends to fill the bigger nicks. A nasty one might need another coat of sealer. Really big holes might need to be filled with CA.

I have found that sanding with 600 length wise gives a smoother shaft than sanding and spinning.

Then polish the shaft and wax it.

This will raise any dent no matter how deep. It will not help if the wood is cut or missing. In those cases I fill with CA as has been previously posted. If it is a dent I first clean the shaft a little, very lightly sand the area so as to remove any oils left from cleaning, next I spray on ammonia, giving it 15 or so seconds to soak in. Then with the shaft spinning somewhere around 2000 to 2500 rpm I place a leather burnishing pad 3/4 of the way around the shaft and squeezing so that the ammonia turns to steam. This steam pushes the dent up as it escapes. This usually takes 5 - 10 seconds. If the dent is still there just repeat the same scenario as needed. Once the dent is raised I lightly sand with 600 and then 1000 grit and finish my normal cleaning, sealing, burnishing or what else normally is done when you clean and polish.

Ammonia is a very good cleaning agent so this part of your shaft may be much cleaner than the rest of the shaft so you may want to clean the whole shaft with it.
