"you speak english so well"

My niece who is half asian hears this constantly dealing with the public. Not too surprising that she speaks english well, being born in the USA to english speaking parents and a star pupil in school. I told her to just smile sweetly and reply that they did too!

I knew a caucasian couple who adopted a chinese baby, and when they came home with her, one of the grandmothers (of the adoptive mother) came up and said, "Oh how cute. Will she be able to speak english when she grows up?"
