Florida Mystery Cue - Whodunnit?

Guys -

There is a guy in my pool hall here in Memphis with this exact same cue. It is a McDermutt.

His has a broken buttcap glued all back together.

Ken

Frankly, I'd be thrilled if its a non-cataloged McDermott as I've been a fan of their cues since the mid-80's. Nothing in their retired or current catalog matches this thing.

I just called them up and got the email address to send the pics. We'll see what Toni at McDermott has to say.

I don't think its a McD just by the butt cap. The bumper and weight pin are wrong. Maybe someone replaced it along the way but I have my doubts.

Direct cut-n-paste from Jayme at McDermott:

John,

The materials and style used in this cue are not consistent with anything we have made. Without a logo on the cue it could be near impossible to identify who made it. There are literally hundreds of small shop custom cue makers out there that could have made this.

The cue does have the same 3/8”-10 joint that we use, but it is my no means exclusive to our brand.

It looks like whoever made this cue was inspired by a Schon butt design, but made oldschool style, without a CNC machine... Here's a photo I pulled from an ebay listing.

I think I'll just start calling it a "McSchon"!

Well, I've eliminated a bunch of cue-makers... still hoping to figure out this mystery.

Confirmed that it was not made by:

McDermott
Richard Black
John Showman
Dennis Searing
Gunn-McEniry
Joe Pechauer
Jerry Olivier
Frankie Doodle

The curiosity is KILLIN' me! If I knew for sure there was a signature under the wrap, I'd have it re-done...

Arrrrggghhhh!!!!

Who made this cue!!!!???? LOL!

It is NOT a Searing he is a perfectionist and the stitch in ring work does not line up!

I've been told this might be a Larry Haymes cue. He used to make cues in the Tampa area in the early to mid-90's under the name "cues by LaRue."

Unfortunately, web searches for that name do not come up with much.

Still trying to solve this mystery, but lovin' the cue. :)

Well

It isn't a schon. Why the comparison? It could be a altered production Cue and probably is. Are the boxes slip on?
Nick :)

Interesting observation about a Mali, but I haven't seen Mali's with a 3/8 joint pin and large bumper like that. Are there any other Mali's out there that look like that?

I have a Mali I bought in the late 70's or very early 80's that has the 3/8-10 pin and similar stitch rings. But the bumper is different.

I have a LaRue catalog at home, I will dig it out and take a look at it this weekend, my LaRue has a 5/16X18 pin, but that does not mean anything, it could have been ordered with the 3/8X10, I will see what I can find.

Hi Cap'n! Any luck diggin around for that LaRue catalog? :)

Would LOVE to put this case of runaway curiosity to bed... Wondering if he was offering any cues with this type of window design, and if he used similar fine stitching...

that is wayne gunn sir ive seen and played with one like it with no stain on forearm

Thanks, Flufly. I had a feeling... from the seller's description of where and when it came from... Just needed to hear it from a third party with some confidence.

I bet it's signed under the wrap... but the linen on the cue now is perfectly fine, and I'm not going to waste $40 on having new wrap installed just to find out.

Got email back from John Costello, who was also making cues in the Tampa area in the early 90's.

He said it looks like a Gunn cue as well.

:)

I showed this cue to Terry McInery in person last week and he confirmed it is Wayne Gunn's work... When I mentioned possibly removing the wrap to see if there's a signature, he advised against it saying it wasn't necessary. He recognized the wrap color as one of Wayne's favorites and also said thin diameter wrap like what is on the cue now is no longer readily available, it would be a waste of good wrap and the new stuff probably wouldn't look as good.

The window work and stitch rings in the butt were also telling to him, as was something about the base of the 3/8x10 pin (wouldn't tell me that secret). Terry still has some of those same stitch rings in his shop.

I'm now 100% confident this is an early 90's Wayne Gunn.

It could also be a Wayne Gunn. He made cues with Rocky for several years. Ricco Cervantes was also making cues in Tampa during that time frame, but it doesn't look like his work. Good luck
