Florida Open 2025, August 5-10, Orlando, Caribe Royale

Yes, I am watching him play now. The way he hold his cue butt is strange but hos elbow motions for the stroke mechanism is clean. SVB is another level. His prestrokes are clean as hell, follows by a pause and then 2 Elbows movements before striking.

Elbows movements is considered strange to me and SVB is the first ever to have mastered it

svb has the hitch and slight lateral movement in the backswing / delivery, it's not textbook but it's very consistent

Btw, does anyone know when the non-tv tables start getting shot clock enforcement? Reason I ask is I'm thinking back to Thorpe/Gangflot's hill/hill game on Table 4 yesterday where Emil, after Billy played a terrible safety on the 6b, had over a full min to think about his game winning 9b into the corner pocket. I didn't hear him call for an extension and I heard no referee call 10secs to go, but as I watched Max/Anthony's match today, the referee was calling out 10secs. Just seemed odd.

it is apparently from L16 onwards

Watching some of the free streams and the highlights on social media, the most important thing that sticks out is the crowd.
There are people there, who enjoy watching pool and this lifts up the whole tournament.

All the money aside, MR made a really bad decision moving the WC to the middle east.
Doesn't matter if you go to the USA, Asia or even Europe, but pool should be played in front of spectators, who appriciate the sport.
The middle east is handing out cash

Last 8:
2 North American
2 Asian
4 European

SVB looks strong but I have a feeling it's going to be Yapp

It’s a trade off, all right. Matchroom needed to bring more money into pool. Comes at a cost, but I think it was worth it. In any case, it’s a 10-year contract. We just have to learn to accept it.

That said, it turns out Orlando would have been a great home. Who knew! Crowds have been amazing. Packed today.

Matchroom found a winner. Frost said it reminded him of the U.S. Open, but on TV it seems like Orlando is better. Curious to hear from people who have been to both.

Hope the Manila Open is a big hit too. MR is trying all right.

Final 8 has some surprises. Lung, Gangflot, Morra.

Lung has had the easiest path to get to here, but he did beat Duong and Alcaide handily.

Gangflot never should have made it this far. His opponents played down to him. But credit him for outlasting them.

One of Lung or Gangflot will make it to semis.

I’d be shocked if SVB doesn’t get to the semis. Morra has played well, but he said he was full of nerves vs Atencio. The crowd has amped up the pressure.

Yapp has arguably been the best player this year, but Max is playing tough. Is this his break thru event?

Krause vs. Neihausen is the one I want to see. Two up and comers steadily improving and breaking into the upper echelon of pool.

Disappointed Atencio could not close the deal. That’s the book on him.

FSR just isn’t consistent anymore. Hasn’t faded badly like Albin Ouschan, but I don’t expect him to win a big tourney anymore. Can’t put my finger on why, strangely. There is no particular pattern he shows when losing.

That’s crazy talk. FSR will win again. He was on top of the world for awhile and had no where to go but down. The competition is deeper than ever. It’s just that hard to win.

During Earl's last match, he jacked up and missed, prompting one of the commentators to say something to the effect that that becomes harder as your shoulder ages. Sure enough, Earl subsequently missed two more shots from that position. I noticed that a couple of Shane's rare misses in his latest match were also jacked up shots. Yapp, on the hand, was consistent right across the board and played like a monster against Oi. I'd love to see Shane win it, but I expect Yapp to take it if he can keep up his current pace.

Sure, he could win a big one again, and he is young enough to think he will do it once or twice. But he hasn’t gotten to the semis of a major MR tournament since he won the WPC in February 2023. Two and a half years ago.

Which is why I don’t expect FSR to be a top favorite anymore. The magic has not returned.

Outside of Filler and Gorst, I am not sure how to pick a top favorite in these fields anymore.

Any given Sunday……

Based on this, I would say SVB or Yapp if I was a betting man.

They are both:
- In the top 12 highest Fargorate
- Top 6 on most money earned this year
- Still in the tournament

Can't say that for anyone else. But pool being pool, and it being any given Sunday, John Morra might F around and win for shts and giggles.

My game had fallen off the last several years. I found out that my left shoulder (I'm left handed) couldn't rotate because of a massive bone spur and arthritis. I've always had a high tolerance for pain and just ignored it. I just had reverse shoulder replacement surgery and we'll see if my game comes back.
