easy;

I think they do make a big dramatic media event out of these things nowadays, even a 6 inch snow storm here in CT will get ridiculous coverage compared to when I was a kid. They make it dramatic because drama = ratings and ratings = advertising $.

That said, this hurricane had a lot of uncertainty and potential to poss be a worst ever storm. I think a lot of fortunate things happened making it much less destructive than it could have been.

On Sun morn I was watching one reporter who looked like it was taking all he had to stay standing in a wind swept rainy broadcast and then, apparently, unbeknownst to him, at the end of his report when he thought they shut down the cameras, I watched as his flailing arms went limp by his side and he began calmly talking with someone, a producer or similar. Yes, he seemed to be acting it up for the camera which imo, if true, he should lose his journalistic credentials over it.

Had a friend from UK staying at my house a few years ago and on one of her first night's here she was watching the local ABC weather guy and she couldn't get over the fact that he said the rain was "going to be crazy". She was laughing and asking "what does he mean the rain is going to be crazy?" She thought that was funny. I think I like the BBC News who provides facts and lets viewers take the info how they wish. ;)

On a more positive note, my gang in Orlando survived nicely just losing some fencing and a few small trees. Their electricity never went out.

I know a lot of people weren't as lucky but it sure could have been much worse.

best,
brian kc

They are going to milk this for everything they can.
Remember it has been quite a long time since we have had any hurricane strikes.

Thankfully even with all the drama over all it is not as near as bad as it could have been.

I don't think it was insignificant. Depends on where. Record flooding in Jacksonville, and Naples got hammered. A buddy in Ormond Beach confirms a tornado passed through, as well as the water. It wasn't some little spring rain.

All the best,
WW

My daughter lives in palm beach gardens and she said they had no electricity for quite a while but suffered no damage ....just tree limbs scattered about.

My son lives in Vero beach and said the same thing about his electric. He had quite a bit of flooding but never entered the house. A fallen tree destroyed his brand new truck though.

I'm on the water in Clearwater, Florida and was pretty sure this was going to be the big one. Thankfully the storm first sucked all of the water out and then turned and didn't blow it back in, otherwise I would be getting yelled at by the wife for live chumming in the living room. I just wouldn't be able to pass up a chance to fish from my couch. So just some trees and fences down and scattered debris but we are all safe. Hope everyone else here is too.

I'm heading to Tampa/St Pete this weekend to check on the house, my parents, and friend's family's winter homes. My truck is safe, so they tell me.

We were fortunate that everything was built to withstand low number hurricanes, as Irma turned out to be by the time it got to St Pete.

We normally get flooding on heavy tropical storms, but my town didn't get any of that either. I'm concerned that the few trees and fences down include my trees and fences!

The big issue now is that with power out at some many homes until Friday or so, Florida is no place to be without air condition. And let's face it, we live in a modern, social media time. We don't remember phone numbers and can't live without AzBilliards or Facebook. With the cell tower out at many places, I don't know how some people are going to get by.

And finally, I'm concerned with the pets, some of which are really not meant to be hot climate pets (huskies, certain terriers, etc). It's the AC that keeps them alive.

It ain't over, but it sure could have been worse.

You don't have a clue. Sure the eye could have zig zagged all over the state leveling everything in its path with many people killed, so I guess "is not as near as bad as it could have been". Haven't has a strike in awhile? You are just ignorant. Must not watch the news much, right.

Here in Jacksonville you probably had half of NE FL without power and many still don't have any, and it could be awhile. Anybody living near creeks, the beaches, and the river were flooded out. Damage everywhere. My neighborhood alone there are at least 6 houses smashed with trees on them. And we didn't get hit anywhere near as bad as the keys or SW FL.

Another fool to add to the ignore list.

Just heard from Ted Harris, he has power now and is getting back to work. Looks like Tom Wirth also has power again and is writing a new book - how to play 1pckt in the dark lol
