Flying with your cue???

With all of the new restrictions, I was wondering if anyone has taken their cue case on a flight as a "personal item" lately? You are allowed 1 carry on and 1 personal item (laptop, purse, coat, etc.). I have a 2X4 that I want to bring as my "personal item" along with a typical carry on. Do you think this will work or will I have to check my carry on and consider my cue case my one carry on? I'm flying US Airways. Not international.

If they don't let me take it as a personal item, I will have to check my carry on costing me 30$. I'm trying to determine if it's worth it.

i always just ship it to whenre im going... no insurance if the airline looses it

That's a good idea but I want to have it in my hands at all times as a personal item. That way, if it's lost, it's on me. I'm leaving soon so it's too late for me to ship it unfortunately. Good idea for next time though.

here's the quote from TSA

Traveling with Sports Equipment
Certain sporting equipment cannot be brought on-board an aircraft. These items are prohibited from your carry-on baggage, but they may be transported to your destination in your checked baggage. Any sharp objects in checked baggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and Security Officers. These items include:

Baseball bats
Bows and arrows
Cricket bats
Golf clubs
Hockey sticks
Hunting knives
Martial arts devices
Pool cues
Scuba knives
Ski poles
Spear guns

While these items are prohibited from your carry-on baggage, they may be transported to your destination in your checked baggage. Any sharp objects in checked baggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and security screeners.

You may bring items such as baseballs, soccer balls and basketballs through the passenger security checkpoint. They will need to be screened through the X-ray machine. Please see the Permitted and Prohibited Items for full list.

If you have a suit case big enough to fit your cues, some people pack them in there, with their cloths. Then carry on the empty case (make sure to remove any sharp objects...like tip picks etc) Porper also makes a travel bag just to hold your cue and case... which is what I use for checking mine.

I learned this the hard way- flying from West Virginia back up to CT one time...

I had to wrap my Whitten in cardboard and have it checked... I was not happy!

it is considered a weapon; trouble is I can do as much, if not more damage with a ball point pen...

Yeah you got to check it to go on the plane. Apparently somebody must have tried to hijack a plane with their pool cue and ruined it for everybody.j/k:thud:

no sense at all

It makes no sense at all that you can carry on tennis rackets ,skateboards,& fishing poles.
Those could cause a lot of damage in the right hands.

Back in November my Tap team went to nationals in Charleston, SC. We were aware that we could not carry on our cues, but some one the guys were a little worried that thier cases might get damaged. They do sell travel cases for such a thing, but we didnt want to spend the money. So I had this large duffel bag, very large. Large enough to put all 5 out our cases in it. Then packed the rest with clothes just as a ''insurance'' plan. It worked out pretty good. But like someone else said, if it is lost, you cant do anything about. Good luck.

I made a container for caring my cue's on a plane as checked baggage.
It's made out of 6 inch schedule 40 pvc. One cap is cemented and the other isn't. Had to do some work on the uncemented side so it can be taken on and off without too much trouble. I used a bolt that I drilled a hole in it for a lock or if they won't let you lock it you could put a cotter pin in the hole..
The only thing is, I've never used it and probably won't.
One thing is for sure, the cue is extremely protected.

I always shipped them next day.

None of us like it but honestly besides a gun, a pool cue makes one hell of a weapon...much better than a knife. Just ask a local guy how he liked the 17 stitches he got when he backed me into a corner an I broke a cuetek butt over his jaw(he didn't like it, nor did his jaw). Basically nothing but a makeshift escrima stick.

Maybe they should ban cheap cues but allow nice ones? Who's going to use a SouthWest as a weapon?

You could use one of these to store your cue case inside of during transit.

GG:

On top of that, ask the guy whose heart you perforated by spearing the cue's butt, pin-first, through his breastplate. Nevermind an even softer target can be the eyesockets.

I have a friend who works for the TSA, and they have training videos that show how common items like a pool cue can be used as a deadly weapon. Someone with good "pike" technique can take out a significant number of people in a matter of minutes.

Does anyone see any reason why I can't wrap my case in bubble wrap, put it in a shipping box, and check it?

The PVC idea sounds great but I don't have time. I would like to use the case that's made for this like someone posted but it is too late in the game to find one.

Woof Biscuit:

Nah, it should be fine ("should" being the key operative word here). If you want to protect your case of cues from "crush" type damage (which a cardboard shipping box with bubble wrap may not protect against), you might want to invest in one of these:

Or, on the higher end of the scale, one of those gun cases like mamono posted above.
