It's important in any "throwing game". You are pretty much "throwing" the cue under handed at the white ball in a controlled manner.

But, at times the white is really close to the object ball...don't want to double hit the white. Jab at it...? I frequently leave it short when I can't follow through.
 
Maybe that's because the phrase "follow through" is commonly mis-understood.

The follow through is the natural result (or consequence or side-effect) of a good stroke. It isn't something that needs to be added, forced, or exaggerated.

When the object ball is close, and you need to avoid a double hit, there are several techniques to prevent follow through without sacrificing the stroke or cue ball action:
