Last night I overplayed my position on the 8 ball and was left with this shot:

START(
%HE1D4%PE1E9%eB9a1

)END

I'm curious to see how others would have dealt with this shot before I show how I made it to win :)

so..... how would you all "kick" at this cat?

There is a few ways you could depending on the actual position of the balls, but I would go one rail down table.

Barbox? The game is 8-ball right? I can't really post this with a wei diagram but another option is the double kiss. Barely cut the object ball to the left with right hand english soft pocket speed. thats the first thing to come to mind.

It looks like it can be cross-banked but if you're going to kick it either the one rail or 2-3 as follows:

START(
%HE1D4%PE1E9%Wr6V9%XE7F2%Yp9Z8%Zs2W2%[H8D3%\p2[3%]F5D6%^G9C8

CueTable Help

If it is bankable I am banking it unless the stakes were REALLY HIGH. Then I would thin the 8 on the right, with right english leaving the 8 ball in the center of the table on the rail and the cue ball to the other end.

If I had to kick at it, I would probably shoot it like Zeeder diagrammed.

The question you need to ask yourself is.....How did you get out of line on the 8 with 99% of the table open for shape? We all do it, but u still need to address that issue for future reference.

Yes this was a barbox, and the ob was slightly forward(closer to the head rail) than the CB. there was about a half inch between the balls.

I'll play it the same way as Zeeder.

I dunno, sjm, barboxes can have some pretty bad rails that make the cue ball do unexpected things. It's become my personal opinion with the experience I'm getting while playing in the APA is, the less rails, the better. Unless you really know that table, that is.

I am guessing the full on masse shot is out of the question? Otherwise, I'm with Zeeder too.

I got a chance to sneak out to the pool hall after work today, instead of studying for my statistics exam tomorrow, and I was definitely most consistant with the kick I diagramed.

Will take your word for it, Barbara. As I've posted before, I've played in a bartable event just once in the last twenty five years. I'm answering as if this were a nine footer.

I'd do this, it is nearly wired...LOL

A couple of years ago at the BCA Nationals, I left my opponent with this shot, and he kicked one rail and got out:

At the SBE a few years ago, Allen Hopkins was playing 8-ball, and left himself about the same shot as you diagrammed, and kicked it in like it had eyes:

CueTable Help

Can the CB really cross its path on the way back the way you diagrammed it? At first glance, i didn't think that was possible. But if you tried it out, I guess it is possible. I have to try it out for myself. You'd probably have to hit it very hard such that the running english would go mostly away after it hits the first rail?

That is the way I try to play. I try to avoid side pockets, and using rails. I try to get most of my position off of the object ball when palying 8 ball. I am a fair banker but would rather break out a ball than play for a bank unless it is a two way shot.

Isn't this the same shot that Fast Eddie set up as a hustle in the opening scene of the Hustler?

If the WEI diagram is accurate and you have the spacing as shown between the balls and the side rail, then the bank is definitely ON. I'd be shooting at this type of bank for sure. I like to hit that type of bank with left english so I can cut the ball a hair more and avoid the double kiss.

That's the shot. I had been practicing something similar just before christmas and when I got left that it didn't take me 10 sec to decide what to do.

And sizl, I left my self that by rolling too far when I shot my last ball to the same pocket.

If the diagram is off a bit and the bank is not possible, I like two options:
a) thinning the 8 and leaving it on the first or second diamond on the end rail and taking whitey up table near the the top side of the endrail, equal to the 8.
b) if you feel like kicking, I like the end rail kick with or without left, but I'd be shooting to go end rail/side rail to the 8.
