Ending this Sunday evening 6/23, I'm auctioning off a pretty 2008 Ginacue pool cue. I think the cue is described OK in the auction, but please let me know if there's something I can clarify.

My guarantee is simple, 100% satisfaction or return for complete refund. If the buyer feels that their dissatisfaction is due to a misdescribed auction, I refund all the postage as well.

This cue is being auctioned with no reserve price. The high bidder will win the cue. This auction won't disappear suddenly. I don't end auctions early. I don't have items for sale locally. This auction will run to the end. Interested buyers will all have an equal chance to bid and win the auction. The market will decide the final price and value of this cue.

OK here's my ramble on cue pricing and the cue market.

It used to be that for both Ginas and TADs, I always figured they would bring at no reserve eBay auction right at what they originally cost from the maker. With TADs I would first subtract out a percentage because their cues are mostly handled by brokers, but after that, my formula pretty much rang true for both.Both guys constantly update what they charge for their cues, which has always served to pull along the prices of their pre-owned market.

The market has changed somewhat, but oddly enough, the lower-priced cues from both makers now go for more than they did new. In 2008 for example, Ernie charged between $1750 and $2250 for a 19A or 17C depending on the options. Nowadays, those same cues go for $2150-2650. While his lower priced cues have appreciated (which started pretty much simultaneous with Ernie's announcement that he would no longer build them), I don't think his higher-priced cues have not reacted the same way.

The answer can't be that be that the demand has fallen off for their high-priced cues, both Ernie and TAD sell everything they make at any price range just like that. Plus I think Ernie won't be building more than a cue or two a month after he finishes his 50th Anniversary cues and I'm sure everybody knows what kind of cues those will be.

Searing and Barry don't count for this comparison because their cues have always been traded at more than either maker originally charged.

This cue for example, was $5,400 in 2008. Its not looking like it will bring that at this auction, maybe it will. But it has me wondering where the break-even price-point is. Does a $3500 2008 Gina now sell for $3500?

I think the answer is that despite how much people may want to own certain cue maker's works, the market of buyers over 4k is not that big anymore. Sellers won't come down, nor should they or that upper market will collapse. This raises the value of cues in the 2000-3500 range.

I would expect your cur to sell maybe $4800 ish. Hard to say. If it were selling at $3500 you would have about 100 buyers!

What I think about is how these high end cues will be valued in another 20-30 years when they come up in estate sales and such. Will people value them as much if the game continues to shrink, league play mentality dominates and the economy stays in a funk.

I like the way you conduct business Kevin, anyone looking for a Gina cannot go wrong here.

Thanks. Its interesting to see where "the line" in.

As far as seeing them at estate sales. I go to auctions and estate sales and such for a living. We go in Los Angeles, an area with lots and lots of stuff, and in a good economy with rising real estate prices, people move quite often, which is one of the main factor estate sales and auctions get filled with stuff to sell.

I have NEVER, not once, seen a cue with more than a $500 value at an auction (other than a cue auction) or estate sale in the 15 years I've been doing this. Plenty of tables, plenty of cues, not one Gina or TAD in 15 years. Weird isn't it?

OK you have set the over/under at $4800. If this was an auction for lets say Tiffany Sterling and the bidding was at 3500 with most of the day left, I would for sure take the "over". Cues are funny, they get bid quite a lot early for some reason, then sit in a lull for 5 days, sometimes there's a flurry at the end, sometimes they are played out.

We will see soon enough.
