For the Science Guys #1

I agree that all the falderal at the grip end probably does nothing to the OB. As far as the CB is concerned, really, isn't tightening your grip mostly about limiting the fluidity of the stroke? IOW, any changes are probably not good, or can be gained via other techniques.

where are all those
super knowledgable instructors
when you need them :-)

Falderal, I had to look that one up. No one in my family had much of that. :D Thanks.

I read your other posts after this one and I agree but this is another example of why people should continue to try different techniques to see if they work for them.

This shot reminds me in some ways of the argument we had many years back on RSB about accelerating the cue stick through the cue ball.

Some people may not be able to justify hitting the cue ball lower and may not feel comfortable "jacking-up" any higher than their perceived limitations and so when they tighten their grip, unknown "magical" things happen like the slight cue tip movement you noted in another post. If this tightening of the grip helps them pocket the ball, (it does for me) by all means have your way with it. If it means that you don't know precisely know what is happening when you tighten the grip, let it be discussed ad infinitum. But please don't suggest that it shouldn't be taught or that it shouldn't be used. (I know you didn't say that).

It may be that it is more difficult to move that cue tip that finite amount and direction with some other technique or it may simply be a more consistent way to get that finite amount of tip adjustment needed to make the shot.

I will accelerate my cue stick through the cue ball. :p

Joey or others,

If you are still curious about this, I have a good summaries on the topic, along with some good resource links, here:

Dave

PS: On some shots (e.g., power draw), I also like to think: "Accelerate through the ball," even though I know it isn't possible. :embarrassed2:

Instructors, quasi-instructors and people interested in improving their game or their friend's game should download your "FUNDAMENTALS" check list. I missed this previously but this shows the many different areas where you could be having a problem with your fundamentals.

You can get Dave's FUNDAMENTALS CHECK LIST HERE.

I may print this out to cover each area with my students.

Thanks!

Joey mit Tie, glad you like falderal. I may be throwing out kerfufel any second now, in a another thread, so be ready :-)

I'm with you 100% -- if it works, whadahey. I myself will confess to using a super loose grip on some shots, because it produces the results I want. I even have a pet theory about why it works, but am extremely dubious that it would hold up to any kind of scientific scrutiny. Soooo, I just on on my merry way and use when I need to. But one thing I'm not going to do is beat on my chest and claim something like more CIT on an OB, or little fairies beating their wings faster to hold up my cue tip :-)

You're welcome. Feel free to print and copy the sheet. That's what it's for.

I aim to squerve,

The almighty 'Throw Stroke' The bottom line is, NO ROLL on the cueball when it hits the obj ball, is the key to transferring the max spin. Some folks slightly elevate, to 'skip' the cueball into the object ball. Stiffening the hand/wrist can be helpful to some players, to avoid an accidental slightly low or high hit....
