For you Southwest Lovers...

I'm asking in this question in the Cue Gallery - well, because we discuss cues here.

I tried out my new Southwest cue the other night and really love it. At a bit over 20 oz's it is a little heavy - but I actually think I can easily get used to that.

Funny - I actually got into a one handed one pocket match, and used the Southwest for that. I saw a few friends of mine gasp in horror as I would sometimes slide it on the rail back and forth for a particular shot....guess they were scared I would ding it. I told them, this was for USE - and if it gets dinged it can always be refinished. I ran 7 with her one-handed at one point. Not too shabby for the first night using this cue.

The shaft is nice and stiff - and the tip feels pretty good. That brings me to question number one.

1. What kind of tip comes stock on the Southwest? I'm guessing it might be a triangle? It feels good but I'm so used to a Moori I might switch. Not 100% sure.

2. What is your favorite taper? Martin (Jazznpool) and Lauri Franklin told me that they also offer the pro taper shaft, and the standard pro taper. I'm considering ordering a third shaft with one of these tapers to test it out. Any suggestions?

southwest question

hi matt, congrats on the new cue, south west uses a triangle tip on their cues.i don't know about the taper,i always had laurie use their standard taper as like like the way that it plays, never tried their other tapers.:p

The standard does feel good - but I thought I might have a Standard pro made as well - to try it out.

Southwest

My Southwest is a little over 20 oz. too. I think it is a tad too heavy as well. But it is ebony nosed and I suppose that is part of the reason.

The shafts I feel are a tad light. I prefer my shafts at 4.0 oz and the both of the orignal shafts are 3.2 oz. I had another shaft made and after some convincing I got one 4.0 oz.

I bought the cue from the boys at cue addicts and I like it pretty well. I had the fella from JOB put a Moori-S and the cue did come to life!

Just my thoughts.

All of my Southwest have the standard taper...i tried the Pro Taper on another SW that i used to have, but it did not feel nearly the same. It almost felt like any other cue & it did not have the same balance. i have also tried Moori Mediums and again...not the same cue. Southwest has something very special with their standard taper and triangle tips. Sometimes it is hard to improve perfection.
Just my opinion.

have you thought of buying an aftermarket shaft for your sw?

a few benifits would be keeping the original shaft in mint condition, plus the ob-1 shaft plays great as does the 314-2's and the z-2's.

I've used a 314 for years on other cues -- but if I decided to play with this cue full time I would stick with the original shaft(s). The balance is perfect as is, and I would not want to throw that off. The triangle tips are different than what I'm used to (moori or layered equivalent) but I could definitely get used to them. All in all, Wild West might have some good advice in not changing a thing.

If it ain't broke, right?

I love SW's, but can't stand most of their shaft tapers. Particularly the real thick, grow in your fingers taper. Yuck. Their pro taper is hardly pro-tapered, and is still plenty stiff. They have a Szamboti taper that is very nice....all my opinion. I almost always have other shafts made that suit me and store the other ones.

I've owned and played with over 20 SW's and they all have hit a little different.

While I've never tried the pro, I think it's like anything else - you get feel most comfortable with what you have the most experience with. Since you have played with a Predator, I would say the pro will feel more comfortable, but it will change the way the cue plays.

I agree with West though. If you like the way it plays, and think you can get used to the feel of the thicker taper, by all means stick with that combination as it's proven itself over time.

Yuck........

I agree if it aint broke dont fix it :) With that said.....
It does not hurt to try a new shaft. Order a pro taper, if you do not like it atleast you know. Also what feels right to some of us feel totally different to another. The standard shaft may turn out not to be for you.

I took the Southwest out tonight and she plays great. I like the taper of the shaft, the triangle tip, etc. As of now I'm not changing a thing.
