Fouls and Mulligans: Hysterical Mishaps During My 8-Ball Tournament Match!

Hey everyone,
I wanted to share a hilarious and somewhat unconventional 8-ball match between my cousin Russell and me from a recent tournament. It turned out to be more about sportsmanship and comedy than actual competition!

In this 8-ball tournament match against my cousin Russell, we had some funny mishaps! Russell picked up the cue ball thinking he had ball in hand, and later accidentally fouled by tapping the cue ball with his cue. I let both slide, but it made for some entertaining moments.

What would you have done in these situations? Would you have called the fouls, or let them slide like I did?

Nice video, what camera are you using? My reaction would be situational depending on the tournament and opponent. In a fun deal for small money and my opponent doesn't have much experience I would let it slide as you did.

I had an opponent do this recently at hill hill in the final of a local weekly tournament. He thought, for reasons unknown to me, that I fouled and walked right up and picked up the cue ball. I tried to stop him, but was too late. I actually felt bad, but a foul is a foul. He wouldn't let me ignore his blunder, either. I took BiH and ran the last two balls off for the win.

I’m gonna yell FOUL, pick up the cue ball, miss on purpose, and pick up the cue ball and ask “ WHAT KIND OF CUE BALL IS THIS?” And then say “Oops” and hand him the cue ball back.
…..that’s your family, don’t let the foul go unpunished, but look after your family.

I would have let the first 2 fouls slide as they were incidental and he knew that they were fouls but I definitely would have called the double hit foul at 2:20 because that would have been a learning experience.

Thanks. I am using GoPro 11's for matches. Yeah, its a smaller tournament and I try to keep it fun for everyone. Now had it been for Big Money or to qualify for a larger tournament, etc. I most likely would not have let it slide... :)

It seems like it happens pretty often, lol. I try to get into the habit of asking my opponent, prior to picking up the ball to ensure this doesn't happen to me.

LOL. I love that response!!! Yeah, its family, and while there is prize money involved, it's not major $$$ and more important to me to ensure everyone is having fun :)

This was the very definition of not "playing to win". This was "playing to hope the other guy loses".

Someone did that to me playing 9-ball, it was called pocket nine, I missed a nine but it went into a different pocket. As I was walking around to pick it up from the hopper to spot it the opponent picked up the cue ball thinking that I lost the game because it went into the wrong pocket. Then him and his friends started to complain that it should have been a loss due to that fact. After I won the match they were telling me that the coins I used to keep score under the rail were illegal to have there because according to them you can't have anything on the table except chalk. There's a difference between actual pool players, and people that happen to play pool.

Lotta common sense involved unlike the judicial system.

If this was your tournament I would say you should treat your cousin like any other competitor, especially the second time around. I understand a race to two isn't a big deal but unless you treat everyone the same fair play does come into question.

Other than that, friends and family I am more likely to bust their chops over a mistake than call a foul if we are just playing together.

Wow, that sounds like a frustrating match! It’s always tricky when people aren’t on the same page with the rules. Glad you were able to win in the end! I've never heard anyone say anything about coins before, it seems like everyone uses them. Personally, I don't link them there, but its never bothered me enough to tell someone to remove them.
