Trying for some opinions on this hunk of micarta I picked up. I'm always looking for micarta, and sometimes I come across some unique pieces. Looks like paper to me; no weave I can see. Though, definite grain is apparent. Maybe 70s, due to the patina. No way of knowing if it's Westinghouse or International Paper. Think it'll work for ferrules?

Paper phenolic.
I have the 1" version of that piece.
Don't have the 1 3/8 version .
I use it as shaft collar and A-joint anti-buzz T-plug.
Machines the best among all phenolics.
It's kinda caramel color when you first turn it.
Then it darkens with time.

Not the same material as the yellowish westinghouse micarta.

This is paper micarta as well. Or paper phenolic if you prefer to call it that .https://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=451480&highlight=micarta

Thanks, Joey.

How do you think it would turn out as a ferrule material?

Are they thick enough ?
They would be fine if they cut clean .
I use them for inserts too.
They live thread really nicely.
You can use melamine glue.
They will turn dark brown when they age .
Unlike the westinghouse one that turns gold .

Here's a pic of mine .

Thanks for the pic. I'm odd in that I like off-color ferrules. I've become so used to micarta, that a gleaming white ferrule is slightly distracting. I think I'm going to cut a section into some blanks and see how they "hit".

I think it would look much better as joint and butt cap material. What's the ID? It looks like the ID is too big for ferrules.

I'd have to machine them out of the length. But, yes, it is just right for butt caps and joints. I don't know if it has value to anyone other than me, lol. I'd like to trade/sell into micarta for ferrules.

I really like the way it looks, but again, I'd rather use it for butt caps and joints. How much do you have?

A guy or gal could get several ferrules from a one inch length of that stock, you’d have to cut and machine the pieces from the wall thickness.. I can think of a few ways it’s possible.
Turn on your thinking cap and make something’
