Found My Stance

Hey guys,

For those of you who saw my first post where I was asking a question or two about finding a stance that works for me.... well I found one and it's definitely unorthodox.

BUT! I feel no back pain when I'm shooting, and I'm getting better draw action because I can comfortably level my cue parallel to the table.

I shoot right handed, and bridge left.

For my stance, I step right foot forward, left foot back, and both knees bend. Left leg bends a lot more and right leg has minimal knee bend.

Again, highly unorthodox but it allows me to keep my back almost perfectly straight while still getting my chin just above the cue.

Maybe a picture would help.

When I try to imagine it, it sounds like you're shooting with the cue behind your back

Hard for me to imagine, but glad you've found it.
In theory, you can shoot with whatever stance you are comfortable with... practice time matters more.

Again, highly unorthodox but it allows me to keep my back almost perfectly straight while still getting my chin just above the cue.

That's great good luck with that, oh by the way have you ever seen any really good player also using this stance?

If not you might want to question your choice. AS there might be a good reason.

I don't think it is "so much" what stance you use, but more "is it stable", "is it comfortable", and "does it work for you?".

If you answered "YES" to all of the above, then that is all that matters until you find something else that works "better" for YOU.

Good shooting. :)

Aloha.

I won't be able to take a pic of me til about Thursday. But I've done something that I hope will help everyone get an idea of the stance.

Right foot forward. Take the left leg and place it on the yellow line (both feet facing forward parallel to the cue stroke).

I hope this picture will help a little.

In regards to the stance itself, I haven't seen anyone else use this - but, it's comfortable for me, it's stable for me, and it's worked best for me because I get the best draw I've ever gotten.

Left hand follows the red arrow as a bridge, and the right hand stays closer to my side to grip the cue. I had to swing my left foot back a bit so I wouldn't hit my chest while stroking.

But hey, it works for me!

How are you getting clearance for your cue? Or are you doing a ton of steering? Why can't you do the same stance but opposite??

I have a good 6-8 inches between my rib cage and my grip hand - tons of clearance.

Neil,

I'm not sure why not. When I go to shoot in a more traditional pool or snooker stance I feel it in my lower back, but for some reason I have no pain when taking up this stance.

I don't have my mind set on keeping this stance though - but I'm going to use what I have to to avoid the lower back pain.

I just got up and felt the difference between the two. When I go to shoot with a more regular pool stance I feel the pain in my lower back on the right side, and when I use the unorthodox stance I detailed I feel no pain.

In a regular pool stance, I have to bend my upper body slightly left to aim down the cue with my right eye and that's when I feel the pain. But with the unorthodox stance, I bend my upper body to the right (relaxing the right side of my lower back) to aim down the cue.

So... I've surmised that I'm having lower back pain in the right by tilting my upper body slightly left to eye down the cue. Anybody have any information on this?
