Frank Coster cues

I just saw a gallery of cues. Could someone explain to me how a very plane maple cue with no inlays of any kind from Frank Coster could be valued higher than relatively fancy cues from Joss West and Richard Black when all are from the same time period?

Coster is deceased and made only a relative few number of cues. His butts are also one piece, even if they have rings.

New his cues were less than the competition at the time. A friend of mine has one of his fancier cues, and if I recall correctly, he told me he paid about 300 directly from Frank.

Thanks. I was amazed at the exorbitant prices on his ultra plain jane cues. They were the same as a Richard Black and Joss West cue, which are never plane. Well, lets say they were hardly basic.

My buddy who has the super fancy cue he bought from him told me the story a few yrs ago of how he bought it. I am paraphrasing of course, and might be remembering a few details wrong, but it went something like this:

Frank made so few cues, it was super hard to get him to build you one. My buddy was told by a mutual friend of the two that the best way to get him to make you a cue, was to just be friends with the guy, and not bring up wanting a cue. So my friend went fishing with Frank a few times, never once asking about a cue. They got to know each other well. Frank was then the one who finally brought it up, and asked if he wanted a cue made. My buddy said yes, and it was to be one of the simpler designs.

Something happened with one of Frank's customers at the time, and he had a cue that the customer couldn't buy anymore for whatever reason. He called up my buddy and explained the situation, and asked if he wanted to buy that cue, instead of the plain one they had talked about. He said to my buddy that it was much fancier, and was about 300. My buddy said of course.

He still has the cue. Its one of the fancier ones Frank made.

Disclaimer, I never met Frank, just relaying the story one of his customers told me years ago.
