I havent replied to a forum post in years, but its been entertaining following all the hubbub.

Heres some facts that have not come out or been misconstrued(funny how that happens alot on the forums):

I called to see what time I would play and they told me I would be in the 2nd round. On the way there, they called me back and told me they made a mistake and accidentally called me in the 1st round. THey asked me to hurry and I said Id do my best.

Secondly, the Sunday matches are timed scheduled. The finals was set for 9pm and it is clearly stated on the chart. After my winners bracket match, I went to eat with several fans and friends. In the middle of dinner, I get a phone call to come back at 8:30pm to play. I explained I was eating dinner. The people I were with said the match was scheduled at 9pm and we wanted to watch it but our food just came out. I told FL Tour that I think its best to start matches at 9pm because some fans might be planning for that time and I think its important to look out for those people who might be coming there just to watch the finals. I did not ever once say, "Ill get there when I get there". I believe Rodney Morris, Rob Saez, and several others who were listening to this conversation can attest to that.

Mitchell and his little brother are real cool kids and we get along great...before and after that match. In fact, they just asked me today for a Dragon Promotions patch and a Predator patch to wear at Junior Nationals. (Good luck guys & the patches are on their way)
Hope that helps clear up some things.

That IS really funny! I was reading it to my friend on the phone and we both cracked up. Especially the Korean chef part...(i love Kim Chi Ji Gae!!) I hope DP can make that happen for the players one day

Butch has always been a great player and has beaten notables such as Paul Johnson in the past when the (what I call) "Classic" Florida Tour was going on in the 80's/90's. It's good to see that he's playing well once again.

Charlie should be commended for his win as well. He's a great player and I'm sure Butch made him work for the win.

One thing that I am wondering though... Is the Florida Tour going to be playing just 10-ball again for their next season or are they going to put 9-ball back in for a few stops?

If you actually replied to a post once in a while and let us (the fans) know whats going on and the possible plans fo the future it would be alot harder for situations to get misconstrued. In the absense of fact and knowledge, opinions and ignorance reign supreme. People dont stop talking when they have no facts, they just get to talking unsubstantiated crap, sad but true. That is not good for you, and really it is not good for us. Keeping us a slight bit more informed on the real issues of this sport would be a win win situation for both you (as it would show you have a little time for the fans en masse and dont want to keep us in the dark), and it would be a win for the fans because they get another player who humanizes themselves by taking a small part in chatting with the common Joes of this forum. I know Kieth has picked up a load of fans and supporters based on his time he has taken on this board to let the fans get to know the real him.

I will be honset CW, I am not really a fan of yours, partly because of the lack of communication by you, that has caused this feeling some people have that you see yourself above the fans and have no time for us. It would not be a problem really but for the fact that you have a really important company and alot of things you have undertaken that are extremely important to the future of this sport and that makes what you do really important to a pool player and fan such as myself, not as a player but in your marketing and promotions role. As such I wish you all the success in the world because your success in your endevours has a chance to break this sport out of the doldrums and into the primetime like alot of us dream about. ATM I see noone else in America who has the chance to do it but the UPA that you were so key in getting off the ground. I can not stand some of what the UPA has done at times (possibly due to my lack of info from the UPA on certain well known conficts that are so public they seem to demand a post once in a while to straighten out the facts) but I have seen the UPA do some things that have been sheer brilliance and that are major steps in the right direction. The tournament in Grand Central Station comes to mind, whoever thought up that as a location needs a raise because that is a cool location that keys in on the larger then life image the game can take advantage of. San Miguel does this as well, they use really architecturally cool public areas to run some events and that gets people noticing the game all the while making the sport appear important (which a small low ceiling dark pool hall does not).

Brutally honest, that I can appreciate. The funny thing is until pool players are making stupid amounts of money and can actually play the big wigs like other sports this game wont be primetime. A thing alot of people seem to miss is that one of the major factors of a sports success is the image of the players as rich and famous. Sports are escapeism for the average joe, he wants to watch people with money and fame and lives alot more interesting then his so he can dream about how cool it would be to be there playing pool for X amount of money with all those pool groupies waiting on the sidelines with pen in hand and breast exposed.

My thoughts on this sport and its real problem.

I think the major cause of pool being a dud on TV is the money. People who tune into a sport on TV want to see something bigger then themselves, they want to see stars that are loaded with talent and money and are playing for huge stakes. They want these people to be famous and have that star quality that makes people tune into the Oscars just to watch people walk down the red carpet. This is not going to happen when you have the finals of a 160 player tournament going and you have 2 people playing who are lucky to make 100K a year playing for about a 15k difference of $30,000 to the winner or $15,000 to the loser. A viewer sees that and thinks "wow, I could not even buy that car I want if I won that tournament, what is the point?"

On the other hand look at golf. You have a sport where a bunch of multi millionaires are all out there hitting balls around a course (as predictable and slow as pool ever was) and they are playing for a payday of over $1,000,000 for first place. The viewer instead sees this and says "Wow, not only could I buy that car I want, I could buy a house as well, my life would be set! What a dream it would be to be able to do that and play pro golf"

It takes money to make money is a popular slogan, it has merit here though. In order for pool to advance it is going to need to impress the audiance with loads of cash and the pressence of stars. It is going to need the sport to look bigger then the lives of the people who tune in to watch it. That is the draw poker has. Joe who works a 9-5 job for 40k a year gets home and he flicks on the TV and he sees the World Series of Poker. He watches a bunch of people sitting at a table betting sums of money that make his yearly wage look like chump change and some guy winning millions of dollars, and for what, playing poker? This is a dream to Joe, he wishes his life could be so exciting and watching poker on TV is an escape for him where he can dream. When he watches pool on the other hand he sees some guy working his nuts off beating 159 other players in a tournament in order to make $30,000 in the biggest tournament in the USA, it looks alot like work to Joe.

Take a pool tournament and put it on TV, have a larger then life setting (a casino floor, or a stadium like the Worlds has, but put it in Vegas cause Vegas sells. When you are opening the show pan down the strip showing the scene in Vegas, the lights, the people milling around, ect... Then show the larger then life casino of the tournament, lets say the Luxor, a shot of the huge pyramid, the large light shooting out the top, the huge sphinx. Now inside the casino we go, briefly seeing the floor and such and then a shot of 2 hot tall show girls at a door who each open one door with big smiles and little clothes, and inside the doors we see the tables. Have show girls sitting near the players who do nothing more then pour the water for the players and such, making the players look important. In no way should the players rack their own balls or their opponent, this can be done by a ref dressed in some fancy tux type thing or if you get Michaella Tab maybe we could squeeze her into one of those show girl outfits? =). The key is to make the players look larger then life, they should be shown as kings and this is their castle. Have the winner winning a million dollars and then after a elaborate scene of getting the cash (not a check, I mean huge wads of hundred dollar bills in a suitcase all stacked up, the viewer will orgasm at the thought and sight of it) and then the winner closes up the suitcase and with 2 show girls, one on each arm walks casually with his head held high into the casino, as the king of his domain. Show over, end credits, leave the viewer wishing he was so lucky as to be a pro pool player. Screw poker.

AKA until a pool player actually looks like a dream job where the money is phenomenal and the perks are amazing (which includes sitting in your trailer bitching at a Korean chef because he overcooked your food while asking how the fuck you have Evian in your trailer when you specifically asked for Perrier) the public is going to see pool as boring. Sports need to be sold on image, not on the sport itself. Golf is not interesting or particularily exciting except maybe the final 10 foot put in a tie for $500,000, but the 45 million dollar contracts that golfers can get and their private jets and the fact they are playing golf in a different paradise every week trying for over $1,000,000 first place all the while being treated like gods sure as hell is. People watch golf so they can sit there and dream about a life so amazing, they use golf to escape their own life of 9-5 $40,000 a year boredom. Golf is a dream to them, it represents a life far more interesting and exciting then their own. That is what pool needs to do.

Charlie,
The fact of the matter is that they drew your name 5th and Mitch's name 6th,you were the third match drawn of the first 14 matches. I don't know why they would tell you that you were in the second round when you were one of the first few names drawn. They wrote your match on their yellow legal pad for the 'announcement' on the microphone and left Mitch standing there for quite awhile waiting for you. When Mitch asked that you be put on the clock, he was told no.Mitch, the Planet 9-Ball fans of Mitch and a dozen or so players that heard about what happened said that you should have been put on the clock and then forfeited. Your good friend and dinner companion Rob Saez said that exact thing. As a matter of fact, it was the last words he had uttered as you walked through the front door and straight up to him and shook his hand.I was standing right in front of him reading the chart when he said it.I don't know why you were drawn in the first few names and then told that you'd play in second round, especially if you hadn't requested being held until the second round.Even the fellow keeping the charts and calling the matches said that Mitch should have moved up a bracket and you should have been out in a lower 'bye' spot.I wonder how some of the other big name Pros would have handled it in Mitch's spot.

Secondly, the Sunday matches are timed scheduled. The finals was set for 9pm and it is clearly stated on the chart. After my winners bracket match, I went to eat with several fans and friends. As I said in my original statement, that someone who had been calling me after each round on Sunday told me over the phone that you'd replied as stated above. When I read your reply just now, I disconnected and called that person the phone to find out where he had heard that. He said that you were called at dinner by an employee of Planet 9-Ball on his phone and after a brief conversation, he handed the phone off to John Ditoro. When my friend asked the person that had first spoken to you, what you said, he was told, "I'll be there when I get there." He said you got back around ten to nine and everything went smoothly. My original post was initiated because Mitch looks up to you and was disappointed that you weren't there when your match was called and many players and friends suggested that he put you on the clock. Although he may not have pursued that avenue without prompting from the others, he was put in an awkward spot. I wasn't aware of what had transpired until about 30 minutes after the fact and after Mitch had been told that you wouldn't be put on the clock. The story had spread through the room by then and everyone that heard it had an opinion and all of the opinions thought that Mitch hadn't been treated fairly.I'm not the type to talk about you behind your back, so I put my feelings into words here on AzB after thinking it over for about 30 hours. There was no malice or hidden agenda on my part,I was simply disappointed in the procedure,as were many others. I don't know how the fellow that put up Mitch's $150 entry felt,as I haven't spoken with him. Perhaps all this talking here on AzB will culminate in some changes in procedure on when matches are called after being drawn and either everyone WILL or will NOT be put on the clock. Whatever rule is adapted should apply to everyone equally... regards

Charlie takes the time to point out everything that did transpire and it appears that you got just about everything you said wrong and gave a completely false impression of the guy (in this scenario); now instead of apologizing (as you suggested Charlie should) you continue to be sarcastic and condescending. Maybe it is just your nature but if it was me I would thank him for clearing this up and then try to figure out a way to make up for any damage I may have caused.

Wayne...you hit the nail on the head, but you have absolutely NO IDEA what kind of person you're dealing with here. First thing you have to understand is that Smorg is above it all. HE is the only one that can pass judgement on this forum and the others, not be reprimanded and asked to apologize.
If you really want to know what I think...PM or email because if I said it here, sure as hell Mike would ban me for this one. This would be the most obscene post that EVER came on AZ and directed to a fittingly obscene individual.

Thanks for the heads up. Well, hopefully Charlie reads this and then he too will be aware of who is making the accusations and spreading the false data about him and throwing in the sarcastic remarks after he explained how he treated the young kid he played and it sure didn't sound like the kid was upset with him.

I know if I was a young kid and I had the opportunity to play a world class player in a tournament I would MUCH rather play him and lose than to have him forfeit to me. First, it gives the kid a chance to see up close and personal how a champion plays, and second, it gives him the opportunity to evaluate his own game against that of a champion, third, he gets to deal with the pressure of playing a top player in front of an audience which could turn out to be very beneficial in the long run. The upside if he had the match forfeited to him (besides maybe making Smorg happy) is that he is still on the winner side in the second round.

john ditoro has told friends, he has to cover for charlie williams. or williams will screw him but good. charlie williams is a self centered ego maniac. he is out for himself, and no one else. another self promoter, ruining the sport. claims he is hands off, when everyone knows. lets other people do his dirty work. wake up pro players, its not too late.

Nomoney, you speak for a minute minority in the pool world, i.e., players of professional caliber, and of those in the minority, I'd venture to guess that not many of them post on the Internet for a whole variety of reasons.

I was saddened to read in the latest news that U.S. Open Champion Tommy Kennedy will not be participating in the upcoming Patriot Cup. When I think of the South and all of its great players, Tommy comes to my mind. He did compete in the last Patriot Cup which was sponsored by Fury in 2003 representing the South, and to this day, he continues to keep a regional tour alive because of his dedication to the players and the sport.

History repeats itself when it comes to pool organizations, especially the men. For whatever reason, those in charge in times gone by had their judgments clouded with greed; thus, the rich get richer, and the poor, in this instance, professional-caliber players, are often left by the wayside as if they are non-entities.

FWIW, I was elated to read Buddy Hall won the one-pocket tournament at the Hard Times Jamboree from the B side of the charts, with Jose Parica coming in second place. Their great wins are inspirational to other old-school campaigners. Not a bad purse either, $3,000 for Buddy and $2,200 for Jose!

Fortunately, in today's pool world, there is an abundance of opportunities to play pool, and I, for one, look forward to a future where all professional-caliber players are treated equal and can enjoy competition on a level playing field. The WPBA is an example of what a "governing body of professional pool" should be. :)
