Back when they dispensed opioids like aspirin, you could get hydro codded cough syrup as easily as the codeine variety. The effectiveness was a huge step up.

I remember paregoric (sp?).

Never failed to silence the nighttime coughing fits. Undefeated!

Way, way back a few jobs ago, I worked for the company that developed Dextromethorphan. It's in just about every cough medication, cause it works. My group helped that production department solve a problem they were having with the process, which was decades old even then, back in the late 80s. There was a push for a while to move those meds behind the counter since people were using dextromethorphan to do some mind altering stuff, but the dosage would end up being so excessive, it never gained traction, so it's still out in the isles.
Look for that as an active ingredient if you have a cough that won't go away, it won't cure the illness, but it'll make that symptom stop for a while.

Yes I'm not well versed in topics like this I'll admit and in all honesty don't like taking all the meds the Dr's want me to take on a daily basis just to stay alive ha ha .

Don't worry I'm not going to quit taking them but I've been known to forget taking them if I get out of my normal routine ha ha

When I worked in a pharmacy as a 16 year old in 1970, you could get 8 oz of Terpin Hydrate and Codeine once every 24 hours. There were a couple of other cough syrups with codeine also, but I forget their names. We had one addicted guy who came in once a week or so, he had a route he followed so he wasn't busted. He used to come in, smacking his lips, and ask for it. Ninety-eight cents plus 3 cents tax. Never had that penny. Once the tax went to 5 cents, the pharmacist insisted on the entire $1.03 to chase him away.
