The original version was just one girl in black. Depending on what side of your brain you were trying to use, you could see her moving either left or right.
With the use of colored lines, the girl on the left has her right leg elevated and is moving to the right.
The girl on the right, has her left leg elevated and moving to the left.
If you watch either the girl on the left or right and keep the middle girl in the middle in your peripheral vision she will change directions depending on which girl you are watching.
