Easy to translate. Driver while coming out of the turn a bit sideways is steering with one hand in this day before rollcages and radios so he can talk to the crew chief, "Losing oil pressure."

"You are in front, run'er till she blows or you get the checkered!"

Only a few decades ago a driver looks over to the driver next to him running the Daytona 500 and the guy had a handheld mike up to his face talking at almost 200MPH. A couple thousand for a radio and headset even back then and the low buck team couldn't afford one so they were car 54'ing it!

When I first started working with a short track crew along about 1970 we still used a pit board. When driver and chief were on the same page a very little writing could communicate a lot.

Of course it is possible the two in the picture are just socializing. "You son of a bitch, you hung a wheel into my car for no reason!" The driver is replying, "Screw you and him, paybacks for last week!"

Reminds me of Sammy Swindell in a sprinter with a cage much more recently. Made one of those hero moves ducking too low in a turn to hold it, he slid up and put a slide job on a sophomore driver. The driver didn't give ground and they both crashed out of the race. Sammy was pissed. Youngsters were supposed to know the old guard had first claim to any part of the track and the kid should have gotten out of his way! Of course the kid isn't going to get any respect until he shows he will stand his ground and protect his line, a rite of passage so to speak! Sammy had/has a bit of an ego but I thought it funny as hell that he took it as his God given right to put a slide job on anybody!
