Man I miss the days of dragging my knees around corners. Those days are behind me now, though. I'll take sitting straight up on a bike and not having to ice my back after every ride.

Agreed. The R6 was hella fun, esp on the track, but I'm old now, and the FLHX just suits me better.

I had two R6s, and two R1s (first one was stolen). Absolute beasts on the track.

I eventually sold because I was no longer scared...which scared the hell out of me riding around southern Cal.

Tried maple or birch?

I work with what's available. Anything else is miles away. But maple is a softwood and grain can be a problem. Birch sounds like a US thing - not common here. Anyway, for drumskin it comes down to hardness, ply thickness and the number of layers, right?
