G0716 10" Drum Sander

I ordered one Friday.

Did you order from the website or call? I noticed that the shipping in the catalog is $69 in the 48 states, but online it says $74.
Anyways, if you could give a review myself, and I'm sure others, would be really grateful. Thanks,
Dave

I always shop between Enco and Grizzly. Just tell the guys at Grizzly that Enco is doing free shipping and you have a 10% discount coupon... You will get something out of it for sure.
I just ordered about $600.00 worth of stuff I needed and I kind of sang the same song and it worked.

I got the machine in today. Have not had alot of time to mess with it but what I did it seemed to work pretty well. One of the short comings is the feed belt, it is made of some plastic material. This material does not seem to grab the wood as well as a rubber material would. When feeding somtimes it would slip and would need a push to get it going but after it was in the sander it would feed fine.
I am satisfied with the machine for the most part.

Many thanks for your update. I pulled the trigger yesterday nite and ordered mine. I am hoping it will go good. I was at Woodcrafters today and they had a 16/32 on the floor for $999. They have their 10% off all machinery this coming weekend,so if there's anything you want, look at it this weekend. the 16/32 had what appeared to be a 80grit feedbelt. It literally felt like sandpaper. Once I get mine, I'll look around to see if something like that exists for this one, to eliminate the slippage.
How did the adjustments go to get it sanding flat left to right? I've heard that most sanders take quite a bit of adjusting of the feedtable to get a straight flat surface.
Have a great weekend, and thanks again for your review of this sander.

Not to be critical, but isn't it a little overkill? Kinda expensive too.
Anybody else think money means something???Let me know,,,Just what I think, I can use that money for wood (River of it)

ps Enco is high on a lot of stuff, so is MSC, and a few others.

You should replace it with a sandpaper belt.

I just replaced the one on my performax yesterday. All the stores wanted $50.00 for the belt, but I bought 2 for that. I called Econ Abrasives, https://www.econabrasives.com/index.php?. I gave them the measurements, and they made it in about an hour.

It's a pain to put on, but it works great.

Bill, Actually $419 shipped is a steal for this type of machine. Even used, usually they go for around $450. Is it a nessesity? Well that depends on the person and what you want it for. If you want flat woodstock that is uniform and thin, then yes, IMO, it's nessesary. Some people spend 4 times that for an inlay machine that they hardly use, so it all depends on the individual. As for woodsupply.....I've got plenty, and it seems to get larger everyday, no funny remark intended:p I have 3 burl slabs arriving next week.

Thanks Royce for that idea. I'll check that out, as I think that is the way to go.

Not wanting to sound to stupid as I have a 16/32 Performax myself but I am just wondering what needs to be sanded so thin and flat, in a cue, unless you are building butterfly type cues?

You guessed it, butterflys. Also I will use it for inlay strips for stich rings etc.

Are you able to sand down to 0.125" with this new machine???? I want one if I can do my veneers for stitch ringwork on billets.

Thanks,

John

What might be overkill for you, might be needed for someone else. I normally buy more of a machine than I think I need, and am thankful when it comes in handy.

I am a FIRM believer in Craigslist as well and if I'm patient, can find what I need for less than half of new....including a 16/32 sander....

Exactly, I picked up an 18-36 Delta drum sander for $150 locally!

It can be done easily on drum sanders, but you need to use a 'backer' board. A piece of 3/4" MDF ran thru once by itself to flatten it perfectly, then either using double sided tape to hold down the thinner stuff to it, or put a small lip on the rear of the board as a stop you can then run it thru the machine until you reach the thickness you need. They can be very handy, and at this price, if the machine works as advertised, you can't really go wrong. You can also use it in the process to square up point wood, or if you do knife handles, gun grips, etc.
The biggest requirement is to have a strong dust collector to hook up to it otherwise it's going to look like a blizzard in your shop:D

Yeah, this weekend I just missed a delta 18/36 for $250 on CL, but someone was already there looking at it when I called. Plus, I have no idea how I would have fit it into my shop! It's too full now as it is now.
