First off...Congrats to Ga Young Kim for her second win in a row on the WPBA Tour.

My question is=does anyone know why Ga Young Kim doesn't compete in any open tournaments in the US like most of the top women players on the tour? I have a hunch she would cash often enough to make it worth her while and would be a boost for the promotor as well. Johnnyt

She played in the SML 9-ball event in Calgary a few years ago. She spoke little to no english at the time.

She drew Mike Massey, it was rack your own, he broke 5 9-ball breaks with the 9 making a beeline straight to the corner each time.

I am not sure but I do not think she lives here (in the U.S.). I also think she is a pretty big star in Korea and probably busy over there when she is not playing in WPBA events.

She actually lives in Taiwan and frequently makes trips to Korea for work. But plane tickets are quite costly nowadays. However, I don't know why she doesn't play in more open events....

You mean Mr Christian was cheating on the racking?

She lives in Taiwan and does much better over there in the weekly tournies and womens events.

Just say she came over to play in Turning Stone, plays her heart out for 4 days and gets 5th. She wins $2k, at least a $1500 loss for her with the flight and hotel. Doesnt make sense-that's why.

I wonder if some players have difficulties getting a visa to come to the US.
It's a sad fact that if you marry a foreigner from many other countries, it can take longer than 6 months for your spouse to get a visa just to come see you in the US, and that's if you're lucky. I can understand making it more difficult for some people to come here to the US, but if it is your wife or kids born overseas, than it shouldn't take so long.

Another reason for Ga Young Kim not to be here is there is no money for her to make here, as far as womens pool is concerned. She would need appearence fees, free hotel stays, travel expenses paid for, free tournament entries and tournaments with big enough prize pool where if she placed 5th or 6th, it still would be worth the exto play.

As other posters have stated, she is a bigger deal in Asia than here in the US. We just do not have a big enough market for most pool players, especially women, pool players. If anyone is going play pool exclusivly for a living, then any smart player will pick and choose what situation is best for them and sadly with a down economy and lack of interest in Tournament pool sponsorship here in the US, Foreign players will stay closer to home....
