Gabe Owens vs Efren Reyes is on ESPN2 as I am typing this (6:04 pm cst.)

Kid Delicious is waiting on the winner :D

Anyone know if this will be on TV in Canada? I'm sick of watching Wool pool master re-runs.

If so...what times and Channels on Bel expressview?

i have seen so much of the world pool masters i can tell you which shot they are goign to play.

I get more pissed off at TV pool with each viewing. They announce they are skipping a game or two due to time constraints and then follow that with an innane interview with Charlie Williams girlfriend or The Dragon himself. Mitch and Eva and Wyche should be bounced. I hate the false excitement they try to create. It's not necessary. Just provide intelligent commentary and a pleasant personality with a little normal good humor. Danny DeLiberto and Mark Wilson are my choices.

Whew, what a match of safeties!! Like Gabe said, he would always be happy to be matched up with Efren, that means he made it that far!! haha

How 'bout when they asked Gabe about his nickname, 'Babyface'? Uhh...how did you get your nickname?

Good God! With less class, he'd reply, how'd you get so fickin' stupid?

Great pool though- sure beat the hell out of everything else on tv last night/ week/ month/ year...

that was a pretty amazing shot to pull out of gabe's hat to win the game. A lot of drama! Good thing i recorded it on my DVR!!! I watched the rest of the games in 4x speed cuz it was 2am and i couldn't go to sleep till i saw it all. I really like having digital video recordings of these matches, every once in a while i'll see a shot that i replay over and over again with different play speeds (1/15th and 1/4 of a second) to see how the players stroked that ball. There was one Cory Deuel shot in the US Open (I think) that made my Jaw Drop... Till this day, I have not been able to recreate it.. Need to work on my stroke. (I did come close to it a couple times)

First time ever seeing Gabe play and he is very impressive.

Gabesmom,
Did he ever mention that 3 safety by Efren and looking back, if he could have actually made the 6 down the rail. Just curious because on TV it looked like a makeable shot but you never really know unless you're there.

Thanks,
Dave

I thought Mr. Wyche was going to have a heart attack on that shot.

It is really hard to know if the 6 goes from the TV angle.

Yeah but it looked like there was a sure hit with safety from there.

I agree that it did "look like" their was a shot there. But at the same time I find it very hard to believe that Gabe "slept" the safety or the shot. I feel like that if the qball passes through the "gap" that he shoots it! :D IMHO

Dave, I'll ask him about that. I don't watch & remember all the shots like you all do. I do remember the final winning shot against Reyes. (he had told me he got to play a 'little magic' of his own against Reyes, haha) It's so tough to beat Reyes, it's awesome he had the opportunity, so I was happy about that. (Reyes was a champ before Gabe was born!)
And his first time playing Reyes being on TV, at least he didn't get completely drilled. I know he misses sometimes easy shots, as most of them do on occasion. And he didn't play up to par against Basvavich. Then Basavich missed a fairly easy shot to lose to Cory. But players can't let those things get them down, there's too much playing ahead. It can be a real battlefield with all the awesome players out there!

Thanks for the reply. These guys are human and make mistakes. It's actually refreshing to see sometimes because I don't feel so bad when I blow an easy out :-)
Your son is a great player and I'm looking forward to watching him again.

It seemed like they left part of the interview out, because Gabe told me about things that would be on it, and it never appeared. I think they may have left many better parts out, and used those parts of it. Oh well. Isn't this a new thing now for the TV players? To try to hype pool up to maybe what boxing or wrestling is? To let viewers know a bit more about the players? I'm sure they'll get better in time by reviewing the show, as usually players try to after watching what they did.

Hey Gabesmom.....a few of my friends nicknamed Gabe 'Big Country' for his resemblance to an Okla St Basketball player Bryant Reeves that also used that nickname. Gabe told me recently when I saw him that he preferred that nickname to any others that have ever been given to him. When I see your boy I always say...Big Country...and he turns to look for me. Seems like he could market that more than 'babyface' or whatever else the TV is calling him. Most of the time when I run into Gabe he isn't so clean shaven anymore probably trying to cover up that babyface. LOL. Tell Gabe I said hi and we are still looking forward to him making a trip to St Lou if he gets off the golf course.

I think the new Dragon Promotion's production was horrible, the editing/format was dismal, and they achieved a new low, cheap presentation of pool with a ridiculously under-clad "bunny" racking with the Sardo.

I felt like I was watching some third-rate local cable production of a weekend poker game, or a basement-produced rap video. I can honestly say that this is regression in terms of ESPN pool, I didn't think it was possible but there it is...imho, of course.

Yeah, he's got that little beard going I noticed. I hadn't heard about the 'big country'. I'm sure he would like that better than babyface....but he just has to go with whatever people call him I guess. I'll tell him hi for you, I think he & Cory are heading to Reno about now, or there already. Maybe they can get some more golf in there, hopefully the weather is better in Reno than the parts of the country they've been to recently. He loves that golf. I keep asking him when he's about ready to play the US Golf Open! Just like to humor him as he does me. I hope they do well in Reno at whatever tournament that is. It's hard to keep up with all of them, but I'm learning. I'm glad AZB keeps up with everything.
I'll look up that Bryant Reeves, I'm not familiar with all the sports players out there, still learning alot.

Like I've always said, you can't win 'em all, it happens to the best of them.
I can't wait to see more interviews of the players. I enjoyed what interviews they did last night, I've never seen players interviewed like that before. I think they should keep that up. I'm sure they'll work out any kinks viewers feel they may have to make them even better.
Thanks for the post!

For starters, you had better be on new cloth to recreate that US Open shot. Because the cloth was new, the cue ball slid ALOT. On older/used cloth it is impossible. Chris Lynch (UPA and house pro at Amsterdam in NYC) did the shot several times in a row as I watched on, and nailed it EVERYTIME. It is straight draw with a lot of sliding. NO low right, low left, etc. Just plain 6:00 draw with LONG follow thru.

Gabe

I just wish they would say that Gabe is originally from Wichita, Ks. where he grew up and first started playing Pool. Sure, he moved to Tulsa for awhile, came back here 2 times, and back and forth. I know the whole family, and Gabe's Dad, Bob, is a very good cuemaker and partner in Shurtz's Custom Cues.

Gabe played a bad match against Danny, and Danny, can you believe it, choked on the match 8 ball when he played Cory. How about the stroke Danny has ... amazing he can shoot so well with that side stroke of his.... I can not believe
he drew the cue ball back to have such an extreme angle on the 8 ball in the final game of his match with Cory. He could have held the cue, shot the 8 in the side pocket and followed up, or just drew back a little and shot the 8 in the adjacent corner pocket where he shot the 7, and got out .... He clutched big time ...
