I remember fishing at ship island as a kid. My whole family are rag baggers and preffered sailing, but fortunately my parents bought a 24’ Sea Ray and we would camp out at Cat island when it wasn’t too hot. A few times I talked them into going to the Chandeleur Islands but that was a big deal. My dad tried but we would actually troll for redfish, but they were so thick we could actually catch them on a planer and drone spoon. All of mine could swim laps before they made it to kindergarten. I wanted them to have a chance if they fell overboard between here and Ship Island. They all ended up doing four years on the swim team. A couple of them still swim today. When you live on the water, teaching kids to swim should be right behind teaching them to walk. Something few people understand is that swimming overboard in the ocean is a whole different animal than the pool -- no shallow end and the water moves.
BB- any chance you remember a charter boat called JP? It was about a 46’ Post I think at Gulfport Marina. It wasn’t until my brother got a job as a deckhand one summer that we started to figure out how to fish. Loved my time there.
