gambling at your house?

this isnt a moral question about gambling, more of a pragmatic one.
First off my situation........local pool room closed down last year, the only one except for a few bar tables within about 50 miles. Id been playing in that room for the last 7 years, and got to be friends with a group of guys. We all gamble at pool.......i have one friend whos close to my skill level who I used to play basically for fun, or very small bets......but everyone else it was normally races to 3 and 5 for 20 to 50 a set.
So my question is this, 4 or 5 of these guys would definitely like to come over and play.......and im sure we will end up gambling, what problems or situations have any of you guys had with gambling out of your home? Any personal rules? Cap peoples losses? Only allow small bets? Just let them call the action? Just trying to anticipate the problems b4 they happen

Its your home so just lay the law down. As long as you know the guys well & you believe they'll be respectful of your home. I did invite a stranger once to come over & play. I had been with a friend at a local tournament in a small town nearby. While waiting on my friend to snap off the tourney...I matched up cheap with a guy. He played ok...he was an APA 7 but that was about all the speed he had. We had been playing like $10 per game & I had him stuck close to $300 before the owner closed the joint & ran us off. My friend says "Kevin has a barbox at his home if you'd like to follow us back there & play some more". Well he did. The room owner had told me the guy had been going off & had the cash. He said to even let him write a check, that it would be good. Well to make a long story shorter...we played until near noon the next day. When all was said & done I had him stuck $8000. He paid $4000 in cash then indeed wrote a check for the balance. He told me I'd need to hold the check for a few days until he transfered some money. Hey...I had $4000 cash in hand, so I wasn't really sweating the check. Well days turned into a month and the check still wasn't good...we had been checking with the bank every day. So...we found out where he lived. A quick knock at the door & visit and we worked out a deal. He gave us an additional $2000 cash right then & I let him have the bad $4k check back. I really didn't mind letting him out of $2000....I mean really...$6000 was a good enough score. So...if anyone ever bumps into a skinny painter from NY who wears glasses & named John...make sure to make him post the cash up!!!

I can't believe he gave you money towards the check. Cool. I once went to a big tourney here in Raleigh and gave the eight to a guy that played fairly well. He definitely had plenty of cash. Some sort of Exec in Research Triangle. Bill _ _ _ _ _ _ _ . We ended up playing even and I was way up. He then asked me to go to his house and play because the Gandy's were "too easy." I rode with him to his Very nice home. Long story short. We played one pocket, straight pool, and nineball and I was up in the thousands range. Played almost twelve hours, or something like that. On the ride back to the poolroom, so I could make my mid-day match, he has his checkbook beside him. I truely felt comfortable he would pay up. Guess what. He drops me at the door, and says, " I thought we were just kidding around." He pulls off. I'm yelling at him the whole time as he drives off. Over a year later, I run into him at the Brass Tap Tony Ellin tourney, and he actually walked up to me and wanted me to place a bet for him on one of the matches. After a couple of f#$% you's were exchanged, that was that. Pretty big fellow, though. Or I might have had just enough liquid to make an even bigger scene. I learned a lot from this goofball, though.

Make it a 5-9 ring game with $50 post per player , 5 bucks a payball when broke your out and end of story, no arguments that way.

im "the one with the table" in our group of friends so more often then not we skip the pool hall and go to my place...its cheeper. we do gamble occasionaly. when we first started we would post money before the game just so there wouldnt be any crap. now we just use the scorring beads and pay up when everyone leaves. it all depends on how well you trust people. i have known these guys for a long time and do trust them. then again i just dont let anyone come into my home. no matter what happens tho we make it clear that what happens on the table stays on the table. i have a sign in my room that says "No Hostility or Egos alowed". if somone is going to get pissed because the outcome of their gambling actions, then they dont need to be in my home. its all fun and games,

Just be very careful. I've heard of (and been around) a number of good intentioned players that have had their mother's, wife's or their unattended jewelry, cash, drugs and other valuable items come up missing.

We actually had a plan B. He kept like 3400 in his account. I kept calling the automated line to see if the check would clear...one day I kept decreasing the amount until it cleared then I knew how much he had in that acct. I could of went and deposited 600 and then cashed the check.

I used to see this guy I played on a weekly basis. He knew what he was doing. The guy plays pretty well, too. He has played in the US Open a few times and showed pretty well. I guess he figured that on his table, he had the best of it. The thought of this guy still burns me. My whole house could've fit into his upstairs. Real condescending kind of guy. Man, I can think of so many ways I would handle this situation, now. Then, I was fresh out of college and a freshman in pool school. That whole scenario would play out different, now.

That is absolutely genius!! I work at a bank and as soon as I read you original post I was thinking just that same thing. Hahahahahhaha, how funny would that have been? He probably kept just below $4000 for that exact reason instead of just closing his account out! Good Thinking!

I think any gambling can go fine as long as you spell stuff out before anyone starts... the stakes, whether payment has to be right now or if you'll take a rain check, and whether anyone's gonna have a problem with someone cleaning out and quitting winner... stuff like that.

And if you figured you'd never get the money back anyways, then just turn it over to the police. Writing a bad check in Florida is a felony. I know, I used to work in collections.

Yeah, it's a hassle to go through the process, but the guy that writes you the check doesn't have to know that. Just print out and show him the legal code that classifies the bad check as a felony, and you might find him a little more "accomodating" in paying back the money.

Yeah, it's a hassle to go through the process, but the guy that writes you the check doesn't have to know that. Just print out and show him the legal code that classifies the bad check as a felony, and you might find him a little more "accomodating" in paying back the money.

I know that I deposit money in my wife's account all the time. All I need to know is her account number and fill out a generic deposit slip. I have also deposited money for friends. I have never been questioned. I guess they think - why would anyone deposit money into someone else's account.

Exactly. I don't think its a crime to "add" money...and hey the check was legit. Not like it was stolen or anything. But still, I'd of switched banks, tellers, go through drive through etc. I would not of left the added money overnight though, in case he checked his acct & got wise to the move.

My experience is that if you want to continue on a long term basis without problems keep the wager very small. Establish a standard limit for 9-ball, One pocket , etc. If someone looses money in your home it can cause problems.

yep you can add money to someones account. We used to have alot of rental property and all the time chasing bad checks.......we had a person at a local bank who would tell us how much the account lacked being able to make the check good. We would go in and deposit the amount then cash the check.
