gambling stories

I have played Painter a couple times and we pitched quarters a couple times as well. Painter was always good for a laugh or two if you sweated his matches.

Has anyone seen One arm Paul, Mortie, Terry, Josh Kirby, Rerun, or
Ricky Simpkins ( i think that was his name...he owned a room out in the
middle of nowhere in east miss.)

Ricky Simpson, still has his place and plays some, Frank. Not as much as he use to. Rerun owns a pool room in Jackson that burned down and was rebuilt last year better than ever. Nice place.

Mortie I believe is down aroound Tampa dealing cards at a dog track. Makes me want to start up my Friday night poker game again.

There are still a couple of players around Fort Walton. If anyone wants a good gambling story, then show up with cash money and a willingness to play anyone. If you cant find the players, then ask me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how about making a game?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,whenever you want. It might end up here on this post.

Last time I did that I got stiffed for 1800 in Fort Walton. Played in the dance club across the street from Starcade. That was a nice lesson about playing on the wire on the road.

Hey Frankncalii, I was wondering since you know Stoney did you ever run into a couple guys named Bobby Newbose and Junior Goff? Bobby is a friend of mine and used to live in Dolthan. He has some great stories about Stoney, Junior and Scotty Townsend.
I know Bobby Newbose he is in evansville in right know

1800 on the wire,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ouch

but then again how far were you all going to play without getting paid?,,,,,,,,,,uh, who got hustled there,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,lol

Billfishhead, did they use to call you Red around Ft Walton? I used to hit Ft Walton on Air Force paydays, mostly little bars and Cash's. Seemed like every time I had a nice game somebody would call this "Red" and ruin things. :D

I mostly went by "Abe" in those days.

early 1980's- longview tx-peppermint lounge. i am minding my own business ,having a few beers & playing $2 pool . in comes 2 guys & a stakehorse wanting to gamble. i recognize cicero bob but not the other two. i agree to some $20 9ball & somehow win $300. now cicero bob is hot.(i find out later that i had no chance to beat the first player) bob gets up & loses a couple of hundred more & now the stakehorse is hot. he invites me to shreveport to a bar that he owned (palace inn) to play the bartender. a few days later i decide to go check it out, but thinking its probably a trap i get a friend to go with me that was a top notch player but never has any money. we pull up to the place about 11 am and it looks pretty quiet so we go in & order a beer. sure enough the stakehorse owns the place & comes over to say hello. i tell him i came to play his bartender & this fellow with me was my backer. he introduces us to the bartender (its a girl) & says she only plays 6ball & i have to give her the 5 & the break. my friend starts laughing & says to play some $200 sets because girls cant play pool. well, this girl played good enough on a barbox with the spot to make it a tough game. after about 30 minutes i tell my friend to go to the car & get my cue. i am still playing & after several more games my "stakehorse" hasnt came back. i go out to the car to see what happened & there is my friend sitting on the sidewalk with a knot on his head. it seems 2 guys followed him outside thinking he had the bankroll & strongarmed him. when they found out he only had $15 they hit him with a pistol. we left the post up money and headed home. its all kind of funny now, but at the time we were not laughing.

Anniston Alabama, mid 90s. Im trapped in Alabama up there seeing some girl. She met me out and knows Im used to going out almost every night. Its been two weeks and Im going stir crazy. She looks over at me and suggests that I go out on the town. I guess Id been getting on her nerves too.

Find D Fords and not much going on. There was a dart pub down the street and I couldnt get a game for money,,,,watch out someone new. So I go find a bar close to the depot. Two tables in the back and the bar right there by them.

Got a few games , all they would play for was a beer. At this place the bartender puts the beers on the bar when you buy them. I asked her if she could keep em on ice or in the cooler til I was ready for them abd her answer was "thats not how we do it here". Now Im begining to build up a few beers on the bar. Im not a fast drinker. A couple of hours go by and the beers are backed up over twenty. Now Ive got a small army of beer built up all neat in rows.

The play on my table has slowed down considerably. I looked over at the other table and there must have been a dozen sets of quaters up. The table I had only had one set on it. I was getting the idea that I may have shown a bit too much speed.

A stranger comes up and asks to play. I tell him that someone has a set up but sure, Ill play some. About that time I notice a guy pick up the quaters on my table. I ask what he wants to play for and his answer was "a beer". My reply was "ill play for five if you help me drink all these beers Ive won". He looks over at the bar and agrees. I win sixty and its late. The bartender calls last call and we re outta there.

Thats how I met Jerry Bento.

I have heard numerous stories about Jerry Bento, though I have never met him. It's kind of funny reading your post about him because I just spoke to him for the first time last night on the phone. He's planning on attending the U.S. Open, and I look forward to meeting him. :)

Jimmy King got rid of his yellow 55 Chevy 210 sedan and had a red 40 Ford standard coupe last time I saw him.

That would be the same Jimmy King.

He got me in a trap when i first started playing.I was horrible and he walk up to be and ask if i wanted to play.I told him no and then he offered me the 6 out.Again i told him no thanks. Then he told me he would play with a patch on his eye.So like a idiot not think i told him yes.{Why would you have a patch with you]Well needless to say he ran over me.I could make more that 3 balls in a row.Plus the guy was playing world beater pool.He was running just about every rack. But it was worth the money to watch him play and also tought me alot about the game. But the guy is loud and cocky and can get to you.

Every time Junior Goff sees me first he walks up to me and asks me if Id like to play a little one hole. I always look down at him and say " Junior, you still tryin to sneak up on me?" and we laugh about it. Hes a fine person. I always take his end if asked to when there is action.
