Its been a while since anyone had a gambling stories thread so here we go.
they dont have to be big money so post away with some good ones. I like to read about them all myself.

Heres one --

It was in the early 90s and I was in Dothan AL playing a guy named Stoney
Stone. We were playing $50/ game one pocket and two guys kept watching us from the bar.
I went to get a pepsi and the guy says "you guys gambling?"
yes I replied that we were playing for 50 a game. He asked whether
we are local or what and I say that we are and that we are friends. He says he and his buddy are from out of town.
We play a couple more games and the guys watch us paying off. we both ahve good rolls on us and it catches their eye.
The guy I spoke with comes over and asks if we want to play partners against he and his buddy for the same 50 a game per man.
I ask Stoney and he says sure. The guy gives us the break and when he is done racking he says..... call all your shots and kisses and clean 8s.
This is when I realize that he thinks we had been playing eight ball and thinks
we can not play at all. We chuckle and then start.
We won the first game and he says lets play a first to 4 for $200 a man.
Now I think maybe we are getting hustled but the guy still does not know how we play and Stoney was a good player with me right behind him.
We say okay and start it off. We were playing scotch and after the next two games in which we won he says I think you guys are playing better now then
when we were watching you before. The room owner had drifted over and taken interest and got up chuckling. He now realizes that the guys thought we had been playing 8 ball.
We won and they left and me and Stoney went back to our game.
The guys watched us playing one pocket and thought they had some young kids with money that couldnt play.
Stoney was racking and stopped and looked at me and the owner and
said " Did that really just happen?" LOL
then the rotten SOB beat me for $150 of the $250 we had just won. LOL

I can still picture that guy saying that we were playing better now than before. He was dumbfounded.

Yeah, Stoney still gambles around here. Was just talking about him last night. Some guys were saying he got beat by their kid ("a champion", they said) playing even one pocket. They're looking to match him up with someone.

They're also looking for any girl in Alabama to match up with this other kid's girlfriend. (She has to have an Alabama license, though.) I've seen the chick play and she's not that great (I'll be betting against her), but I guess he's got it in his head she's the best in Alabama. Anyone interested, EMAIL me.

Here's my funny gambling story: I used to play on the south side of town until I met my now-ex-boyfriend, DL, and starting going to the "nicer" pool hall. The cook there would see me come in with DL and I guess he figured I didn't play. He started talking about how he wants to play "the girl" (me) so my buddy (who was backing me) and I would kinda go out to the bars trying to "accidentally" run into him. Finally got him playing me some 9-ball at this shitty redneck place until closing time, at which point we went back to his pool hall. He offered me the four playing 6-ball on the bar box, which I accepted (who am I to turn down? lol) and played till I beat him out of $400. (By the way, I had just had my eye surgery a week or two before, and had my follow-up surgery earlier that afternoon.) The next night he wanted a chance to win his money back, this time on the nine-foot, a Diamond, the one I grew up playing on about ten years ago lol (The pool hall I grew up playing had closed a couple months before and this place bought their tables.) My buddy said alright so I beat him out of another $600. He didn't win a single set either night, and all he could say was: "I was going to drill your [profanity] in." lmao

Hey Frankncalii, I was wondering since you know Stoney did you ever run into a couple guys named Bobby Newbose and Junior Goff? Bobby is a friend of mine and used to live in Dolthan. He has some great stories about Stoney, Junior and Scotty Townsend.

I have some great stories about Bobby. If you know Bobby, you know he can play. The first time I ever met Bobby N. was in Dothan,AL at a bar called Drifter's. I went there with a guy named "Bobby Jones" and Bobby Nubose was playing in a 4 handed 9ball ring game for $30 a man. And for all of you guys that knew "Bobby J" had to know he was foaming at the mouth to get in this game, but they would not let him, "BN" did not care if "BJ" got in but the other guys said no. "BJ" was pissed but he cleared his head and told me that he could see the "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow (that being "BN" after he busted the ring game. Well it was already about 4 in the morning and about that time they called last call and "BN" turned it on and finally busted the ring game up. "BJ" sprang into action and asked "BN" if he wanted to play some heads up 9ball for $30 a game and "it" was on.
"Bobby Jones" was a world class talker, he could talk his way into a all girls dormitory if he had to. That being said, he talked the bartender into staying open for a nominal fee. They played back and forth for a while until they raised the bet to $50 a game. They took a break and "BN" went to the bathroom and I followed. He asked me if I was "in" with 'BJ" and I told him I learned along time ago that "BJ's" money was worth only about a nickel on the dollar because he made such bad games. He asked me did I think "BJ" was in a bad game and I told him that I had a feeling that the pot of gold "BJ" was referring to was actually a bucket of piss about to rain down on him. He walked out and I was thinking about what was fixing to happen and I my thoughts came true within the hour. They raised it to $100 a game and it was OVER IN AN HOUR. "BN" had busted "BJ" and "BJ" was astonished, for those of you that knew "BJ" you know what happened after he lost. HE CUSSED AND RAISED HELL, then he told Bobby N. that he had the last two on the big table. LMAO "BJ's" money was not worth a penny on the dollar. Frank you know it is true!
That is just one of my many stories about Bobby Nubose, I can honestly say that he is a GOOD MAN and it was a pleasure to have known him for the next 10 or so years. Life takes us on some unexpected paths sometimes and our paths went in different directions, but I am glad mine crossed paths with Bobby Nubose. :)

Are you from Evansville RoyM? Is Bobby N. back in Indiana?

i was reading this thread and i have heard stories about a bobby newbold i believe that lived/lives in evansville, weird last name so i figured it had to be the same guy, from what i was told he was the best player in evansville back in the 70's?, i'm from a small town outside of evansville that used to have weekly tourneys and bobby had been a regular there last year, i never got to meet him but was told he was a really nice guy that everyone seemed to like, and i think the guy that told me about it mentioned that bobby had been married for 10-15 years or something and had just gotten a divorce and that's why he started playing again, i spent a lot of time playing around evansville back around 1999/2000 and i never seen/heard anything about him back then.

Yes i'm from Evansville and Bobby is living back up here. We play 1-pocket at least once a week heads up. We played Friday night for about 4 hrs. and i came up 4 games ahead(normally it doesn't go like that, he was having a bad night). You can't help but like the guy. He has told me some funny stories about Scotty, Junior,Stoney and a few other's i've forgotten about at the moment.
What is your name ,if you don't mind me askin? I know he'll get a kick out of this at the pool hall tomorrow night. I wished i'd had read your post before i went down to the hall tonite because he was their.

Well just go to the Roundabout on Franklin St. in E'ville and he'll be their(most nites). He is a super nice guy. He takes his lumps and wins just the same, smooth.
Actually there was a better player around in the 70's called Bobby Legs. The guy was 1 of the best bar box players i'd ever seen at the time. He lives in the Carolina's now but used to live in Princeton, In.

No i'm from Evansville, In. Bobby lived here most of his life and moved to Dolthan for several years. We play each other quite often and he would tell some great stories about Scotty and some of the others i mentioned.

Please tell Bobby that big Frank from Dothan (now southern california) says
hello and that I hope to see him agian one day. We had amny good times together as well as many battles playing one-pocket and banks.
Ever heard of a guy named Kevin Overstreet. He was from Evansville or
right across in KY.
I was taught pool and gambling by most of the names you have mentioned.
I have been out a few times with Junior and always got the cash. He could get a nun to $#%^.
I have great respect for Bobby and consider him a friend. At one time he used to spin balls in off the side rail with draw and get farther back up table than anyone I had ever seen. Me and Stoney might have played 50 times at least. I can remember when Stoney fiorst started coming around with a friend of his named Todd. I have played his brother JP as well. Pretty good guys. Never had any problem with either. The last weekend before moving to Cali I went to a tourney in Mobile and Stoney and I made some money together.

Yo bro where you been hiding? I think we could fill a book with stories
from us growing up. I just wish Tice and Jimmy A were around to help.
I was telling some guys here the Bobby Jones story about him spearing he wall with the cues at Checkers ( i think). he was still trying to borrow one
when I left. :D

Hemi and John
Jimmy King used to pop in and out. He was a guy I stayed clear of and I am sure you know why. He used to thrown on an apron and play. He was
a good player but I usually watched him lose and explode.
He was always called Jimmy around the parts I saw him.

Marissa
If or when you see Stoney tell him I said hello and that if he ever makes it to SoCal or Vegas to look me up through here. I had not heard too much about him lately and was wondering.

Lanett Does Garland still have his place?

If you were from Ft. Branch them you probably went to that tourney they had every Thur.(i think). I went there a few times with Bobby, Chris and a few other's. I ended up with a 2nd and 3rd. Was beaten by Bobby and Tong. Those single game double eliminations were tough. You ever go back in the Roundabout just ask for Roy

I'll see him tonite. He'll be glad to hear from you i'm sure. I called him after i got off the internet and asked him if he knew Bobby J. He started laughing, told me to find out who you were. He told me him and a few others used to rob stoney when he was younger but they couldn't today. Said they created a monster.

That's the one. A little bit crazy and really can't stand prosperity. He also will do pushups on the table. He does play that bump pool pretty sporty. The Outlaw Jesse James, Jimmy King, one and the same.

My name is Todd from Dothan. You make sure you tell him I said hello. Ask him does he plan on going back to Florida any time soon. Ask him about the time we was in Daleville and we pulled the old "father and son" hustle", it worked like a charm thanks to him. He is the one that got the ball rolling and I just played along with his lead. We was "laying it down" and they never knew what hit them. Those were the days :)

I have been coaching my son's baseball team since March, tonight is the last game. WHEW. I need a break!

It is cool to hear about Bobby. That really brings back some memories, and I could write a book about the stories from Checkers!

Congrats on your trip to Vegas! Keep us posted on your success!
