What does it mean to "lock up" or "freeze" a certain amount of money. I see this done when the bet is a per game or a multiple set situation.

And why would you want to do this? What are the pros/cons?
 
you'd do it to make sure who ever you're playing doesn't quit after 1 set. it just guarantees all parties a dollar value that they'll get a chance to play for.

i've had people beat me the first set and try to unscrew and quit me stuck. freezing up money guarantees that doesn't happen
 
e.g you freeze up a $1000 which means that one of you is leaving the game with that money. As the last poster mentioned, it makes sure that your opponent will not win a set or two, or even lose a set or two, then pack it up and leave. This ensures that you are going to get the most out of your time and money.

Similar to the practice of "posting up," one of the main 'cons' to locking or freezing up money is that you have to actually be in possession of the money that you propose to bet. In other words, no 'air barrels' or 'shooting blanks.'

Wow, it´s realy great to be an AZ Member - that´s new for me too, as i am an European :grin-square:

Would you explain me some other things, too.
If somebody gives the EIGHT to his opponent in 10 BALL - does that mean he got the 8 and the 9 or only the 8 :confused:
And do you play 10 Ball without SHOTCALLING in the US, like 9 Ball :confused:

Giving the 8 would mean precisely that. Giving an opponent the "8 out" would include the 8 through the last ball.

i play 10 ball without shot calling. unless it's negotiated before the game begins that is. i don't play it much but i prefer to play that the 10 spots if it's pocketed in the lower 2 pockets on the break.

any other questions me or another az'r can answer for you?

But these can not be the official rules in the US, or :confused:
In Europe the 10 is spotted in every way if it goes in on the break, and for sure all shots have to be called.
That´s one of the reasons why many top players realy like that game - the luck factor is going down, you know.

If i call no ball (called safe) and a ball drops in, my opponent can take it or let me play the next shot.
If any ball, goes in a wrong pocket it´s the same like above - over here in europe.

And these are our official rules and we play like that - gambling, too. !!
So, anybody can confirm that as the official rules in the States, too :confused:

from what i've seen ( i mostly see 9 ball but...) unless you specify before the match starts 10 ball is played just like 9 ball.

if those are the rules you want to play by it's important you tell your opponent before you post the money.

even things that you think are givens should be gone over before the balls break. just to be safe you should always say "ok it's a race to (put number here) for (put dollar value here), right?"

if you want to play call shot/pocket (or what ever) make sure you talk about it while you're setting up the game! remember you're gambling not playing in a tournament. Some people take these kinds of arguments personal
