GC I shimmed?

How can I tell if a table is shimmed without taking the felt off the corner? What should the pocket width be and where do you measure (inside or outside the shelf)?

measure from point to point of the pockets, the GC1 had 5" pockets cushion point to cushion point. Also you could hold 2 balls side by side and put them between the points, they would have about 1/2 " to spare space on an original GC1.

I measured the widest point at 5", the shelf is almost 2" deep and the pocket is 4.5" wide at the back of the shelf. I hit a lot of balls that rattle in the pocket on my table, but play pretty well on a bar table. I would like to take shims out if they are there but don't want to take the felt off if there is no need. What do you think?

Doesn't sound like your pockets are shimmed, so there would be nothing to take out. Gold Crown I's have a deep slate and the standard cut pockets facings are not parralel. This equals many hung or spit out balls.

Here's a pic of mine which have had the facings cut parallel and the sub rails and cushions extended. The pockets at the points measure 4".

A ball can be hit down the rail at speed and still be pocketed.

Post up pics of your table!!!

You are correct sir!!!

PoolHustler...that's darn near as tight as a snooker table corner...VERY nice.

Randy, IMHO embrace your pockets. If you can overcome as PoolHustler said, "hung or spit out balls." and dial yourself in with them you're going to be a monster on any barbox you'll ever play on.

The reason a pocket is shimmed is to make the game harder by making the target pocket smaller, which subsequently makes you a better player.

Ernesto and Oscar Dominguez did Poolhuster's table as well as my own. They way they do 4 inch pockets is the best. You can hit the ball with speed and it doesn't rattle. It's NOT like playing on a snooker table. I use a lot of spin and I'm not nervous of the pockets. You just have to concentrate a little bit more.

Atthecat....I hope I didn't intimate that the tighter the pocket the closer it played to a snooker table...rounded pockets on a snooker table vs. the pointed corner pockets on a pool table. Can't compare the two.

The reference I attempted to make was since the balls were 1/8 inch smaller in snooker, the pockets are tighter and if you can dial in on smaller pockets with bigger balls it will make your game that much better.

Not living in the SoCal area anymore I can't get the dapper father and son duo to help me out as mechanics.

I was fortunate enough to have Jack Shurtz and his wife Eva to finish mine. (I live in Wichita KS now) We talked about tightening the pockets a bit, but I wanted to make sure that wife and daughter could catch some "slop"

Great pictures gents!

No, I knew what you meant. I was just pointing out that you don't have to baby 4 inch pockets with less spin like a lot of people on this site seem to think.

I will definitely post some pics of my GCI when it's up Poolhustler!

I think bar boxes are meant to swallow as many quarters in one night as possible ! Now your on a ""Pool table""

Welcome to the world of pool  P.S. Leave the GC1 alone and learn to shoot on it !!

I'm afraid that if I played on this table, I would have to buy it!!!!!!

Blows me away that you are selling it.

Gold Crown Pockets

tight is good but looks like you could use some bandaids in them pockets... Here is my GCII as demonstrated by the Maestro RKC himself... BTW , I have since installed GVIV pockets that look sooo much better and hold more balls , Brunswick part # 51-868515-000

I agree that the way Glen does his pockets is super nice!!! My table is a ball return table, no need for new pockets. Although I would love to find NOS OEM pocket liners for my table. The old dark grey ones that were originally used.

Russ....

Come on over Russ! I will deliver. LOL.

What's the purpose of glueing the cloth under the slate? Is it just for looks?
What if you want to pull the cloth tight again? I guess there must be a good reason.
